The environmental group Save Our Great Salt Lake is planning to ask city councils in communities all around the Great Salt Lake to pass a resolution that would have local governments consider impacts to the lake in its planning and ordinances. The idea is to give the lake itself a voice in local government.

Conserving water has never been more important in the western U.S. A new special blend of grass seed being offered by Salt Lake City Public Utilities uses 40% less water than regular lawns and aims to do just that:

Salt Lake City Public Utilities partnered with Utah State University and the Turfgrass Water Conservation Alliance to come up with the special blend that uses up to 40% less water.

After spending 5 weeks in the nest box at TNC's Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve, the kestrel chicks have joined the vibrant surrounding ecosystem! We're recapping the journey here:
🪺After making the nest box their home, the kestrel parents incubated five eggs for about a month.
🐣The proud parents welcomed their first hatchling on May 17! The other four babies arrived in the following 24 hours.
🐀In the first 2 weeks, the growing chicks enjoy frequent feasts!
🐤The chicks start to grow into their feathers and begin to stretch their wings during week 3.
🐥At 4 weeks, they're almost grown up and are preparing to fledge. They grow up so fast 🥹
🪽After nearly 5 weeks, the last baby leaves the nest!

A nugget of good news for your Wednesday morning: rising water levels at the Great Salt Lake = rising levels of brine shrimp!🦐

That being said, the lake has recovered only to the level it was at back in 2020. There's more work to be done, but we must celebrate the small wins on this journey to protect the Great Salt Lake.

We are so grateful to have been invited to the Baile for Great Salt Lake! Our lovely Gran Lago Salado was celebrated with poetry, rapping, dancing, delicious pupusas and community. A big thank you to the Tracy Aviary's Jordan River Nature Center, Plumas Colectica and everyone else involved in this great event!

Dinner time!🐀🤤

Woodmice, voles, shrews and other small rodents make for decadent kestrel dinners. An adult kestrel can eat 4-8 voles per day, and this number increases as its babies grow up too. A true family feast!
