Join myHometown for our final Day of Service of 2026 as we work together on a major fire-mitigation and clean-up project around Holmes Creek Reservoir in east Layton.

📍 Holmes Creek Reservoir Area

Volunteers should enter from Oak Hills Road on 2800 East and park as directed near the access gate.

We’re hoping to gather 200–300 volunteers to remove dead weeds, branches and overgrowth, as well as clean up trash and debris throughout the recreation area.

Please bring rakes, gloves, sunscreen and sturdy closed-toe shoes. Battery- or gas-powered weed-eaters and trimmers will be especially helpful! We also need volunteers with pickup trucks who can help gather debris and transport it to the landfill off Highway 193.

Water and donuts will be provided! 🍩💧

Due to the Labor Day holiday, garbage will not be picked up on Monday, September 7, 2026. If your scheduled garbage day is Monday, garbage will be picked up on Tuesday. There could be a delay in garbage pickup for the rest of the week, but still put your garbage out on your scheduled day.

Get ready for an evening filled with spooky stories, fall fun, and seasonal shopping!

New and aspiring storytellers are invited to participate in a FREE Scary Storytelling Workshop Series led by the Utah Storytelling Guild. Over three workshops, participants will learn how to craft and perform chilling tales. Those who complete the series will have the opportunity to perform at Whispers in the Dark!

The U.S. Air Force is announcing its annual free indoor air sampling program for homes and businesses located near areas of groundwater contamination from historic activities at Hill Air Force Base. Testing is the only way to determine if potentially harmful chemical vapors from the groundwater could be entering buildings.

Outreach for the 2026-2027 sampling season is starting soon. The Air Force will notify eligible property owners through a phased approach, beginning with door-to-door visits where a door hangtag will be left with information. These visits will be followed by a postcard mailed to all eligible addresses.

If you receive a door hangtag or a postcard, your location is eligible for testing, and your participation is strongly encouraged by the Air Force, EPA, and UDEQ. These materials will contain a private web link and QR code to schedule your sampling appointment.

When scheduling, you may choose one of two options:
• Technician-placed sampling: A trained technician places the pencil-sized device in your home.
• Resident-placed sampling: You place the device yourself using our step-by-step instructions for a contact-free experience.
Sampling will run from October 2026 through March 2027. All testing and any necessary mitigation are paid for by the Air Force. If a test indicates chemical vapors are above action levels, the Air Force will offer the installation of a mitigation system at no cost to you. The city’s drinking water has not been affected and remains safe.

E-motorcycles are becoming increasingly popular in Utah, especially among younger riders. With that popularity comes some important questions about where they can be ridden, registration requirements, youth safety courses, and the difference between an e-bike and an e-motorcycle.

The Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation has put together an E-Motorcycles 101 One-Stop Resource Guide with helpful information for riders and parents, including:

• Utah e-motorcycle laws and regulations
• Youth OHV safety requirements
• Registration information
• E-bike vs. e-motorcycle guidance
• Safety and riding information
• Videos, brochures, and other resources

Before you or your kids hit the road or trail, take a few minutes to make sure you know the rules and have the proper training and equipment.

Layton City Council Meeting Action for Thursday, September 3, 2026

Subject: Appoint Brent Young and Michael Rasband as Members of the Layton City Audit Committee – Resolution 26-39

Background: The Layton City Council established an Audit Committee (Committee) to assist the Council with the planning and review of the City’s annual independent audit. This Committee consists of the Mayor, one member of the City Council, and two outside financial experts who are Layton City residents. From time to time, the Council member and outside expert members are rotated.

The terms of the two current outside financial experts are due to expire, and following several years of service, both have decided not to extend their terms. Committee appointments carry a two-year term and may be extended by the Mayor, subject to the approval of the City Council.

The Council will consider appointing two new outside financial experts to serve on the Committee.

Subject: Interlocal Cooperation Agreement for Highways or Public Transit Project Reimbursement between Layton City and Davis County Regarding Gentile Street - 2400 East to 2600 East, Project PW25-58 – Resolution 26-40 – Along Gentile Street from Approximately 2400 East to 2600 East

Background: Resolution 26-35 was approved on July 16, 2026, which approved the ex*****on of an Interlocal Cooperation Agreement between Layton City (City) and Davis County (County) regarding Gentile Street – 2400 East to 2600 East, Project PW25-58 (Agreement).

Prior to executing the Agreement, it was discovered that a portion, of the cost of materials, was not included in the original reimbursement total, creating the need for a revised agreement to be reapproved.

The County has agreed to partially reimburse the City in an amount up to 80 percent of the total permitted or authorized costs or expenses of the Project, not to exceed the amended amount of $1,682,400. The City has agreed to complete the Project on or before December 31, 2027.

This week's Hometown Hero is Ella Isom

Meet Ella Isom, a remarkable 17-year-old from Layton whose story is one of resilience, leadership, service, and perseverance.

Adopted from Ghana at age three after experiencing early childhood trauma, Ella overcame challenges and labels that could have defined her future. Through determination, hard work, and years of personal growth, she has become an honor roll student, athlete, artist, leader, and role model.

Ella’s accomplishments include studying abroad in Toledo, Spain, serving as captain of her basketball team, being selected as Student Body Artist at Layton High School, and attending the LEAD Conference in Washington, D.C.

Service is at the heart of Ella’s life. For years, she has participated in food drives, supported homeless students, and been involved with organizations celebrating Black history, culture, leadership, and her Ghanaian heritage.

Now, Ella is pursuing her dream of becoming a chef through the ProStart Culinary Arts program at the Davis Catalyst Center.

Ella’s journey is a powerful reminder that circumstances and labels do not define our potential. Her courage, compassion, determination, and commitment to serving others make her an inspiring example of what is possible when you never give up.
