The Lawton Firefighters proudly support Joe Buchanan for State Senate. He understands the needs of first responders, stands for public safety, and will be a strong voice for our community.

Lawton Local 1882 has my back and I'll always have theirs.
When the call comes in, firefighters don't hesitate. They show up for us without a second thought. That kind of commitment to community is exactly what I want to bring to the State Senate, because they deserve a voice in the Capitol who shows up for them just as boldly.

In the month of July, your Lawton Firefighters responded to 1,452 calls for service — from structure fires and vehicle accidents to medical emergencies and everything in between.

That’s nearly 47 calls per day, 24/7, no matter the weather, the time, or the risk.

Every one of those calls represents a moment someone needed help — and we were there.

Thank you, Lawton, for trusting us to answer the call.

R.L. Smith Resigns as Ward 2 Councilman

Lawton City Council is expected to discuss the vacancy at the next meeting on July 22 in the Wayne Gilley Auditorium.

Please see below:

Dear Mayor Booker, City Council and Citizens of Ward 2:

It is with a heavy heart that I tender my resignation as Ward 2 City Councilman, effective immediately. The decision has not come easily, but due to ongoing health concerns, the need to prioritize time with my family, and new business opportunities that require my full attention, I believe this is the right step forward.

Serving the residents of Ward 2 has been one of the greatest honors of my life. I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me and for the opportunity to work alongside such dedicated colleagues in making our city a better place.

Thank you for your support, understanding, and partnership throughout my tenure. I will always cherish the time I spent in service to our community.

With sincere gratitude,

R.L. Smith
Ward 2 City Councilman

This is what “cross manning” looks like in Lawton.

At Station 8, only three firefighters are being asked to staff four different fire apparatus: a ladder truck, an engine, a brush rig, and a hazmat unit. That means when one call comes in, the rest of the equipment—and its critical function—sits unmanned and unavailable.

This isn’t a resource issue. It’s a manpower issue.

We want our community to understand: this is not safe. Not for you, your family, or your neighborhood. Seconds matter in emergencies, and this kind of staffing gamble puts lives and property at risk.

Our firefighters are trained, ready, and willing to answer the call—but we need the support and staffing to do it right.

Help us stand up for public safety. Lawton deserves better.

On July 1st, Lawton firefighters signed a new contract with the understanding that there would be no cuts to current staffing levels. We entered this agreement in good faith—believing it would protect the safety of our firefighters and the citizens we serve.

But within hours of signing, the City made the decision to shut down one of our ladder trucks and relocate another from the busiest station in town. This move immediately reduced our total staffing by six firefighters and eliminated a vital resource for emergency response.

Let us be clear: Lawton Firefighters would have never agreed to this contract if we had known it would result in diminished protection for our community. This is not just a staffing issue—it’s a public safety issue.

We stand united in our commitment to protect the citizens of Lawton, and we will continue to fight for the resources and support necessary to do our jobs safely and effectively.

Sadly, we are without this manning in Lawton, and the CITY OF LAWTON has recently decided to completely shut down a truck as of last week.

Nine people were killed and 30 others hospitalized after a fire ripped through an assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts Sunday night. IAFF
