A simple gust of wind can turn a small flame into a fast-moving fire.

As more families spend time grilling outdoors this summer, it’s important to stay aware of weather conditions and nearby hazards before lighting the grill.

Hot embers, sparks, and open flames can quickly spread to dry grass, decks, fences, or nearby brush, especially on windy days.

Before grilling, remember to:
• Keep grills away from homes and combustible materials
• Never leave a grill unattended
• Watch for windy conditions
• Keep a water source or extinguisher nearby

A little extra caution can help prevent outdoor fires from spreading quickly.

Stay safe and grill responsibly this summer.

A safe day on the water starts before the boat leaves the dock.

Before the music starts.
Before the coolers are packed.
Before the first stop on the lake.

Make sure your boat, safety gear, and passengers are prepared for the day ahead.

Before heading out, button up your boat:
• Wear properly fitted life jackets
• Check weather and water conditions
• Never operate a boat under the influence
• Know your location and surroundings
• Keep safety equipment onboard and accessible

A few simple steps can make a big difference on the water.

It is with profound sadness that Rockdale County Fire Rescue announces the line-of-duty death of Firefighter Juan Antonia Smith II, who passed away on June 12, 2026.

Today, we honor a brave firefighter who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others. His courage, dedication, and selflessness exemplified the highest ideals of the fire service and will never be forgotten.

Though his watch has ended, his legacy will endure in the lives he touched, the community he served, and the brothers and sisters who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

Rest easy, Firefighter Smith. We have the watch from here. ❤️

During Georgia summers, heat-related illnesses can happen quickly, especially during outdoor activities, sports, yard work, or long periods in the sun.

Watch for signs like:
• Heavy sweating
• Dizziness or weakness
• Headache
• Nausea
• Cool, pale, or clammy skin

Familiarize yourself with the signs of heat exhaustion in case you ever need to act:
1. Move them to a cooler place
2. Give water if they are alert
3. Loosen tight clothing
4. Act early before symptoms worsen

Staying hydrated and taking breaks from the heat can help prevent emergencies before they happen.
