“Without hard work, nothing grows but weeds.” – Gordon B. Hinckley

Tomorrow is National W**d Your Garden Day! After you bring your household hazardous waste to our collection day event at Gwinnett County Fairgrounds, tackle those weeds in your flower beds and garden.

A great hack for easily pulling weeds by hand is to water your beds before donning your gloves, then grab those weeds at the base and pull upward with a gentle twist. You could also invest in a weed-pulling tool!

During our last Citizens Advisory Board Meeting we were honored to present a very deserving member of our Green Youth Advisory Council with the Lynn Cobb Student of the Year Award, Named in honor of a former executive director of the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation and a true champion of environmental education, this award celebrates the achievements of an environmental steward between sixth and twelfth grade.

Our 2025 Lynn Cobb Student of the Year Award went to Sophia Yuan, a rising senior at Parkview High School who is already making a global impact through youth-driven environmental leadership. She founded Clean Choices Together, a youth-led nonprofit that helps small businesses transition away from plastic packaging through sustainable materials, data-driven tools, and storytelling. What began with her own small jewelry business has grown into an international network of more than 400 members, 150 volunteers, and 12 student directors spanning 30 states and 19 countries, helping 81 businesses reduce plastic waste and reach more than 239,000 shoppers.

Sophia also serves on the Jane Goodall Roots & Shoots Youth Council USA, the Plant-for-the-Planet Global Ambassador Council, and Project Green School’s National Youth Council, where she collaborates with youth leaders and shares environmental resources with thousands of students.

Closer to home, she contributes her energy and ideas through Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful’s Green Youth Advisory Council, where she is helping launch a garden at Camp Creek Elementary School. She also represented Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful at 2025 Climate Week in New York City, sharing insights on sustainable packaging and youth-led environmental solutions. Sophia’s vision, leadership, and commitment show how one student can inspire both local action and global change. Congratulations Sophia!

If you missed Carmita's latest "Musings From Our Master Gardener" in our June e-blast, you can read it below! She shared Popular Georgia Natives That Will Thrive in Your Garden...

Georgia’s hot summers, humid weather, and clay soil can be challenging for gardeners. That’s why native plants are a smart choice. They naturally adapt to local conditions, require less maintenance, and support pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

Here are my Top 6 Georgia native plants to add to your garden:

1. Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea)
This hardy wildflower produces bright purple blooms all summer long. It thrives in full sun, handles drought well, and attracts pollinators.
Best for: Pollinator gardens and sunny flower beds.

2. Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta)
Known for its cheerful yellow petals, Black-Eyed Susan is easy to grow and blooms from summer into fall.
Best for: Cottage gardens and beginner gardeners.

3. Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia)
A beautiful native shrub with large white flowers and stunning fall foliage. It grows best in partial shade.
Best for: Woodland and shaded gardens.

4. Coral Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens)
This native vine produces red trumpet-shaped flowers that hummingbirds love. Unlike invasive honeysuckle varieties, it grows responsibly.
Best for: Trellises, fences, and pollinator gardens.

5. Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana)
Beautyberry stands out in fall with bright purple berries that attract birds and add seasonal color.
Best for: Borders and natural landscapes.

6. Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris)
This ornamental grass creates soft pink-purple plumes in autumn and thrives in Georgia heat and humidity.
Best for: Walkways and low-maintenance landscapes.

Why Choose Native Plants?

They need less water and fertilizer to thrive
They handle Georgia weather better than non-native annuals and perennials
They support local wildlife
They require less maintenance than most ornamentals

Adding native plants to your landscape is an easy way to create a beautiful, sustainable garden that thrives year after year. See you in the garden!

Happy ! Pollution along our shores and in our oceans continues to harm entire ecosystems on land and in the water. If you're beach-bound this summer, consider collecting litter as well as seashells. We can all do our part to save the planet - even while on vacation!
