Lawrence Community Garden Project- 9th & Miss

Lawrence Community Garden Project- 9th & Miss Cooperative community garden on Mississippi St. behind the Cork & Barrel on 9th. Important note: The garden needs more hands this year!

We grow peas, beans, radishes, leafy greens, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, sweet potatoes, flowers & more! The garden is tended collectively and the harvest is shared among those who care for it. We typically grow more than we’re able to eat, so when the time comes we can discuss the logistics of sharing our bounty with the broader community. If you’d like to join, give a shout out to this

year’s organizer: David Collins. Send him a text at 62O_212^one/three/nine/three (just trying to avoid spam). Some more about the garden: When the garden was first established it shared the same lot as the Community Mercantile, now located at 9th and Iowa. The Cork & Barrel that took its place still has the mural painted back in ?... Over the course of decades, members of the evolving collective have applied compost and manure to enrich the soil. They’ve added various native and non-native perennials bringing forth a steady stream of beauty & pollinators. They built the shed and the fences. Planted a stand of tall canegrass on the west side that provides the most lovely afternoon/evening shade in the summer. And they’ve made use of plant-based mulch and the occasional cover crop in order to protect and nurture the soil structure and ecosystem. Last year for example, one of our members seeded several sections with ryegrass at the end of the season. =)

Pics of kale and chard from the beginning of July. Feel free to pluck the light green weeds pictured growing in between. It has many common names, but I like to call if Three-seeded Mercury. The second pic has lambs quarters growing among the kale.

Harvest from the end of June. There’s a bunch of potatoes hiding under the carrots. = )

Hey there! Anybody have a pick up truck (or know somebody with one) we could borrow next Saturday to load up some compost for the community garden? We can use a tarp to keep things pretty clean and also sweep up afterwards. = )

Our Story

Located at 9th and Mississippi, this community garden is the oldest in Lawrence. In 2014, we began a partnership with the KU Student Farm, which is a collaborative effort to reach KU students that are in need of gardening space in town. There are a few individual plots, but most of the space has been converted into large, communally gardened beds. The dedicated gardeners work hard to create an aesthetically pleasing and productive garden. We collaboratively plant, maintain, harvest, and sometimes eat as a community. All extra produce goes to friends, neighbors, participants, passer-bys, and sometimes food banks.

Join us every Thursday at 5pm-Sunset and every Sunday 3pm-Sunset. Feel free to stay for as little or as long as you like!
