“You don’t have to foster to make a difference… ask yourself, ‘How can I help the ones who are?’”

Foster care doesn’t have to happen in isolation.

There are real reasons children enter the system.
And real challenges families face once they’re in it.

We believe a stronger community can change the trajectory for vulnerable and underserved children and families.

Because the clearest measure of a community is the way it cares for children. Especially children in crisis.

So we're here to tell the truth about what families need, share real stories, and invite our community here in Northeast Kansas to step in and be part of the solution.

That’s part of what it means to be a village.

Simple sensory tools can help children feel more calm and regulated.

This can be especially helpful for foster and kinship caregivers supporting children who have experienced trauma, change, or uncertainty.

Our caregivers recently joined a webinar with trauma-informed occupational therapist Pediatric Connections/Deana Lesher, owner who shared practical ways caregivers can support children during stressful moments.

Things like: a cozy blanket, rocking, deep pressure, quiet music, or taking slow breaths together can help a child’s nervous system feel safe.

Through our Project SOOTHe program, we help caregivers with understanding a particular child and his or her sensory needs.

We also provide sensory objects such as weighted blankets, swings, sensory toys, and white noise machines that can help ease anxiety for children.

Not all stress responses are the same.

For children in foster care, stress can build up after hard experiences, big transitions or feeling unsure about what comes next. That stress may show up in different ways.

During a recent webinar, trauma-informed occupational therapist Pediatric Connections/Deana Lesher, owner explained that some children show stress through fight or flight behaviors, while others go into “freeze.”

Fight or flight may look like yelling, aggression, or running away. Freeze can look like shutting down, avoiding eye contact, or seeming disconnected.

Children in a freeze state may need extra time, fewer words, and calm support. When caregivers understand the difference, they can respond in ways that help children feel safer and more connected.
