PROCLAMATION

Recognizing May as Mental Health Month in the City of Laurens

WHEREAS, mental health is essential to the overall well-being, strength, and quality of life of every person, family, workplace, school, neighborhood, and community; and

WHEREAS, mental health conditions affect people of every age, background, and walk of life, and many individuals and families in our community experience challenges related to stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, grief, isolation, and other mental health concerns; and

WHEREAS, seeking help for mental health concerns is a sign of strength, and early support, treatment, compassion, and community understanding can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who are struggling; and

WHEREAS, stigma, silence, and misunderstanding too often prevent people from receiving the care, support, and encouragement they need, and it is important for our community to speak openly and respectfully about mental health; and

WHEREAS, the City of Laurens recognizes the vital work of mental health professionals, counselors, social workers, first responders, educators, healthcare providers, faith leaders, nonprofit organizations, families, friends, and community partners who provide support, care, and hope to those facing mental health challenges; and

WHEREAS, the well-being of our citizens includes not only physical safety and economic opportunity, but also emotional health, resilience, dignity, connection, and access to appropriate care; and

WHEREAS, the City of Laurens encourages all citizens and residents to learn more about mental health, support those who may be struggling, promote kindness and understanding, and help build a community where no one feels alone in seeking help;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Nathan Senn, Mayor of the City of Laurens, South Carolina, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2026 as

MENTAL HEALTH MONTH

in the City of Laurens, and call upon all citizens and residents to support mental health awareness, encourage compassion and understanding, reduce stigma, and promote the well-being of all people in our community.

Today I was proud to present a proclamation recognizing May as Historic Preservation Month in the City of Laurens to Apryl Bailey, Chair of the Historic Preservation Commission and a member of the Main Street Laurens Board.

Historic preservation is not just protecting old buildings. It is about honoring and telling our story, strengthening our downtown, preserving our city’s unique character, and investing in the future of Laurens.

This year’s observance is especially meaningful as our City and County celebrate the reopening of the historic Laurens County Courthouse, built in 1838, and as we remember Laurens County’s own Ann Pamela Cunningham, the heroine of Mount Vernon, whose work helped launch the preservation movement in America.

The City of Laurens is proud to join with Main Street Laurens and Laurens County in encouraging all citizens to support the preservation of the places, stories, and landmarks that make Laurens so special.
