Laurel (Delaware) Historical Society The town claims five governors of Delaware: Nathaniel Mitchell (1805-1808), John Collins (1821-1825), William B. Cooper (1841-1845), William H. Join us!

Laurel was established in 1789 on the site of a former Nanticoke Indian reservation, and grew to become one of the wealthiest towns in Delaware by the late 19th century. l Historical Society was founded in 1977 in the aftermath of the Bicentennial celebration. The original group of 60 founding members has grown to nearly 300, and the society owns or manages four museums: Rosemont, the home of Governor Nathaniel Mitchell (121 Delaware Ave); the recently-restored Hitchens Homestead (205 Willow St); the Cook House (502 E. 4th St); and the Laurel Heritage Museum, a.k.a. the Train Station (215 Mechanic St). The society also owns and plans to restore the George B. Phillips House (502 S Central Ave). It's an exciting time to be part of the Laurel Historical Society!

We are pleased to announce that beginning on Sunday, June 7th, Centenary United Methodist Church will join the list of local historic sites open for free tours. Completed in 1912, the church is home to some of the most stunningly beautiful stained glass windows in Delaware.

SAVE THE DATE: Join us at the Hitchens Homestead on the 4th of July as we celebrate America's 250th birthday, the restoration of the Homestead, and the completion of our new "Hitchens Barn" event venue! Homemade ice cream and cake will be available for purchase, and there's no better spot from which to watch the fireworks. 🇺🇸
