Leaving should not be a life-or-death decision.

Yet for many victims of domestic violence, the fear of leaving is rooted in a very real danger. When an abusive partner has access to a firearm, every attempt to seek safety can feel overwhelming. Survivors often remain trapped by threats, intimidation, and the fear that violence will escalate if they try to leave.

Victims often ask themselves questions no one should have to consider:
🚨"What happens if I leave?"
🚨"Will they come after me?"
🚨"Will my children be safe?"
🚨"Will I survive?"

Mississippi currently has the highest gun death rate in the nation, with an average of one person killed by a firearm every 10 hours. Fi****ms have also become the leading cause of death among young people ages 1–17 in our state.

For victims of domestic violence, these numbers represent the reality of living with the constant threat of violence in a place that should feel safe: HOME.

During Gun Violence Awareness Month, we recognize that domestic violence and gun violence are deeply connected. Supporting survivors means 🧡understanding the barriers they face, 🧡the risks they navigate, 🧡and the courage it takes to seek safety.

🔶Take a moment and ask yourself: If fear was the reason you stayed, what support would you need to leave? Then commit to being part of that support for someone else. Learn the warning signs. Believe survivors. A single action could help save a life.

Great news!

The TAKE IT DOWN Act officially went into effect on May 19, allowing survivors of image-based sexual abuse to report platforms that fail to remove intimate images or videos within 48 hours of receiving notice from a victim.

Survivors can now file complaints directly with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) through TakeItDown.ftc.gov. The FTC also has the ability to pursue action against platforms that fail to comply, including significant financial penalties.

The TAKE IT DOWN Act also makes it a federal crime to knowingly share or threaten to share nonconsensual intimate images, including AI-generated explicit images and deepfakes.

As technology continues to evolve, so do the forms of exploitation impacting victims and survivors. This bill marks an important step toward holding platforms accountable for online abuse and image-based sexual exploitation.
