Local 1619 is excited to meet the incoming members of the department. These applicants started their journey in October of 2021. They will complete their training 9 months from the beginning of their academy. From the time that these applicants started their hiring process we have lost 53 members to retirement and resignation. In the time it will take to complete their Career Recruit School another 150 are eligible to retire.

As a department we are already significantly understaffed based on national standards and now are woefully behind in keeping up with attrition. This puts an devastating impact on our members who end up working many more hours than their normal schedule. This leads to increased fatigue and mental health strains on our fire fighters and paramedics.

Prince George’s County MUST find a more efficient way to recruit, hire and maintain our Fire Fighters or we will see potential impacts on service delivery to our community.

Prince George's County Professional Fire Fighters at PGFD Station 849 had a visit from some of the area children. KinderCare stopped by Station 849 and were showed around the fire trucks. These children were educated of fire safety and what to do in an emergency. Just another way Prince George’s County Fire Fighters are taking care of the community!
