How often do you smudge yourself or your space? This is a good little summary of the practice.
In Native American cultures, Old Danish cultures (Vikings), smudging is a form of Indigenous purification ritual that involves burning medicinal plants to clear negative energy and restore balance. It’s used in healing practices.
What is Smudging?
Sacred Practice: It is a form of healing prayer deeply rooted in many Native American and First Nations cultures.
The Four Elements: The ritual combines a shell (water), sacred plants (earth), fire, and smoke (air).
The Sacred Medicines: Traditional practices use sage, cedar, sweetgrass, and to***co, each holding unique spiritual significance.
Meaning of the Plants
Sage: Used to drive out bad feelings, clear emotional clutter, and purify spaces or people.
Cedar: Associated with strength, grounding, and inviting protection or healing.
Sweetgrass: Braided and burned to draw in positive energy, peace, and well-being.
What You Need
Sacred medicine: Dried white sage, cedar, sweetgrass, or lavender.
Fireproof vessel: An abalone shell, clay dish, or metal bowl to catch ashes.
Ignition: Matches or a lighter.
Tool to guide smoke:
A feather, fan, or your hand.
Ventilation: Open a door or window slightly to let energy leave peacefully.
Step-by-Step Guide: Set Your IntentionClear your mind and decide what energy you want to release or invite in. Approach the practice with reverence.
Light the Medicine: Hold your smudge bundle over your fireproof bowl and light the end with a match or lighter.Let it flame for a few seconds, then gently blow it out so it smolders and produces thick smoke.
Cleanse Yourself: Use your hand or a feather to gently waft the smoke toward your body.Guide the smoke over your head (for good thoughts), eyes (for clear vision), mouth (for kind words), heart (for positive emotions), and down to your feet.
Cleanse Your Space: Walk mindfully through your home or room.Direct the smoke into corners, around doorways, and near windows where stagnant energy may linger. Save room entrances and exits for last.
Extinguish Safely: Allow the bundle to burn out naturally in your fireproof bowl, or gently press the burning tip into sand or a flat surface to extinguish it completely.Ensure no embers or smoke remain before leaving it unattended.
As a Native American/ Dane I have grown up performing smudging rituals. It’s as much a way of life for us as it is breathing.
There are many modern ways of doing what was once always a way of life for the first people’s. As long as your intention is clear and you come with a clear heart, you are doing it correctly.
