The Greater Latrobe School District is located in southwestern Pennsylvania at the foothills of the Laurel Highlands. It is approximately 50 miles east of downtown Pittsburgh and 30 miles southwest of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Route 30 bisects much of the district, which encompasses the City of Latrobe, Youngstown Borough, and Unity Township, with approximately 30,000 residents. We take great prid

We strive to be progressive in promoting teaching techniques that appeal to the various learning styles of pupils. During strategic planning, members of the community who represent various businesses, industries, and parent organizations challenged educators to develop and use assessment systems that are results-oriented. Our Strategic Plan emphasizes the development of communication skills and mathematics. Specifically, we expect our students to write and to write well. Additionally, students will be asked to participate in the development and delivery of speeches, and their ability to read and write will be assessed through standardized and local testing measures. In mathematics, we have implemented pre- and post-testing and quarterly assessment procedures at various grade levels. This program is designed to streamline the curriculum so that we avoid unnecessary repetition and prepare students to make practical application of concepts taught in mathematics.

Greater Latrobe Senior High School student, Kaden Shannon, has been selected for the prestigious NASA STEM Enhancement in Earth and Space Science (SEES) Summer Internship at The University of Texas at Austin Center for Space Research. 🚀

During this nationally competitive program funded by NASA, students collaborate with scientists and engineers to conduct authentic research, use data from NASA Earth-observing satellites, design Lunar and Mars habitats, analyze imagery from the International Space Station, and investigate the effects of microgravity. The program is designed to expand student knowledge and experience in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through advanced Earth and space science education. ⚛

Students apply for SEES and are selected competitively. Over 3000 applications were received for the coveted 118 on-site internship positions. Students work remotely with their project scientist prior to the on-site internship, complete an Earth and Space Science course and a Python coding course, and hear from NASA Subject Matter Experts as part of the SEES Speaker Series. Students selected will then come together July 5 in Austin, Texas to conduct experiments, tour facilities, network with other students, and conduct research while being mentored by NASA, industry, and academia subject matter experts at The University of Texas at Austin.

On Fridays, students in Mrs. Bowley’s classes at Mt. View Elementary School watched “On the Road with Steve Harman”. Each week, classes discussed kindness and how to make a difference in our community. Students called it Project Kind.

As a culminating activity, students hand-painted rocks, gave each one a unique name, and wrote a short story describing their rock’s special talent. Some rocks were great listeners, while others were experts at cheering people up, spreading smiles, or helping others feel less lonely.

The rocks were delivered to Brookdale Nursing Home, where staff members shared them with residents. The thoughtful gifts brought joy to many residents, and their smiles said it all.

This project gave students the opportunity to see how even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s day. Through their creativity and compassion, our fourth graders demonstrated that kindness is a gift that can brighten hearts and build connections within our community. 🫶 💕
