EMS Week Day 7: EMS Remembrance Day

Today, we pause to honor and remember the EMS professionals who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

EMS Remembrance Day recognizes the courage, dedication, and selflessness of those who devoted their lives to serving others and providing care and comfort during moments of crisis. Their commitment to protecting their communities and helping those in need will never be forgotten.

This week, members of the Town of Colonie EMS Department joined EMS providers from across New York State at the New York State EMS Memorial Ceremony to pay tribute to the lives and legacies of fallen EMS professionals.

As EMS Week comes to a close, we reflect not only on the work EMS professionals do each day, but also on the sacrifice, compassion, and unwavering commitment that define this profession.

We thank those we have lost for their service, dedication, and the lasting impact they made on the communities they served.

Naloxone saves lives.

Free community naloxone kits are available for public pick-up at the Town of Colonie Public Safety Building as part of our ongoing commitment to overdose prevention and community health.

These kits contain life-saving naloxone medication designed to temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and can be administered by anyone during an emergency while waiting for EMS to arrive.

Kits also include fentanyl and xylazine test strips along with information about local treatment and recovery resources available 24/7.

You do not need to be a medical professional to save a life. Access to naloxone, education, and early intervention can make all the difference during an overdose emergency.

EMS Week Day 6: EMS Recognition Day

Today we recognize and thank the EMS professionals who answer the call every day with compassion, professionalism, and dedication to serving our community.

EMS Recognition Day is an opportunity to honor the members of the EMS system who go above and beyond what is expected, often during some of the most difficult moments in a person’s life. Whether responding to medical emergencies, providing critical care, supporting public health initiatives, or standing ready 24 hours a day, our providers remain committed to protecting and caring for the residents and visitors of the Town of Colonie.

We would also like to thank Peter Crummey Colonie Town Supervisor and the Town Board for their continued support of the EMS Department and for recognizing EMS Week through last week’s Town Board proclamation. Their ongoing support of public safety, provider wellness, training, and community health initiatives helps ensure our department can continue delivering high-quality emergency medical care to the community we proudly serve.

To all EMS professionals, dispatchers, educators, healthcare partners, and support staff, thank you for your dedication, sacrifice, and service.

EMS Week Day 5: Save-A-Life Day

When an emergency happens, bystanders are almost always there before EMS arrives. That is why community education and public access to life-saving resources are so important.

Today for Save-A-Life Day, we are highlighting programs and initiatives that empower our community to take action during emergencies and help save lives.

The Town of Colonie EMS Department proudly supports several public health and safety initiatives, including:

🩸 Blood Donation Awareness
Every blood donation has the potential to save up to three lives. Community members can learn more and sign up to donate through our virtual blood drive:

This week, EMS Medical Director Dr. Michael W. Dailey joined students from the National Medical Association at a neighborhood community health fair to distribute naloxone kits and provide public education resources focused on overdose prevention and community wellness.

Simple actions by everyday people can and do save lives. Education, preparation, and access to resources make our community stronger and safer for everyone.

EMS Week Day 4: EMS for Children Day

Children are not just small adults, they have unique medical, emotional, and transportation needs that require specialized training, equipment, and care.

Today for EMS for Children Day, we recognize the importance of pediatric-focused emergency care and the ongoing efforts to improve outcomes for our youngest patients.

The Town of Colonie EMS Department has continued to invest in specialized pediatric equipment designed to safely care for and transport infants and children during emergencies. This includes specialty transport equipment for newborns and mothers, as well as child restraint systems specifically designed for children who are ill or injured and require ambulance transportation.

Our providers regularly train on pediatric assessment, treatment, and safe transportation practices to ensure children receive compassionate, age-appropriate care during what can often be stressful and frightening emergencies.

Providing safe and effective care for children requires preparation, training, and the right equipment, because every child deserves the highest level of care when they need us most.

🚴‍♂️ May is Bike Safety Month & Tuesday, May 19 is EMS Safety Day!

As warmer weather arrives, the team at Colonie EMS wants to make sure every rider in our community stays protected. Whether you are commuting to work, traveling through town, or watching your kids learn to ride, a helmet is non-negotiable — no matter your age.

To promote safety for EMS professionals, patients, and the public, EMS Safety Day encourages first responders and communities alike to focus on prevention and reducing risk before emergencies happen.

As part of Bike Safety Month, Colonie EMS is helping spread awareness about the importance of bicycle helmet safety. Wearing a helmet dramatically reduces the risk of serious head and facial injuries in a bicycle crash, including crashes involving motor vehicles.

Did you know?
• It’s the Law: New York State mandates that all bicycle riders and passengers under 14 must wear a certified helmet.
• National Standards Matter: Before buying a helmet, look for the CPSC safety certification sticker inside. It guarantees the helmet is tested to absorb heavy impacts.
• Lead by Example: Adults are just as vulnerable to head injuries as children. When you wear your helmet, you protect yourself and help encourage safe habits for younger riders.

Before you pedal off today, use the quick “2-V-1” fit check:
👉 2 fingers above your eyebrows to ensure it covers your forehead.
👉 V-shape straps snugly fitted right under your ears.
👉 1 finger of space maximum under your tightened chin strap.

Let’s keep our roads and paths safe this season. Put a lid on it before you roll! 🛑🚴

EMS Week Day 2: EMS Education Day

Education is at the core of providing high-quality emergency medical care.

Today we recognize the importance of continuing education, clinical excellence, and ongoing training for EMS professionals. At the Town of Colonie EMS Department, we are committed to investing in our providers through monthly clinical and operational in-service training, rescue technician training, leadership development, and continuing education opportunities that directly improve patient care.

From cardiac emergencies and strokes to trauma and critical medical calls, our providers continuously train to strengthen skills, improve decision-making, and optimize patient outcomes. These efforts help ensure we meet and exceed key performance indicators in emergency care throughout our community.

We are proud that this commitment to education and quality improvement has contributed to the department once again receiving the American Heart Association Mission: Lifeline® EMS Gold Achievement Award for excellence in heart attack and stroke care.

Training never stops in EMS, because our community deserves providers who are prepared for every call, every patient, and every emergency.

Today, we stand with our friends at Mohawk Ambulance Service as they mourn the unexpected loss of one of their own.

The EMS community is a small one, and moments like this remind us how deeply connected we all are through this work, through service, and through the people who become family along the way.

On behalf of everyone at Town of Colonie EMS, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the member’s family, friends, and the entire Mohawk Ambulance family during this incredibly difficult time.

Please keep their crews and loved ones in your thoughts in the days ahead.
