On June 6, 1905, the newly founded city of Las Vegas had its first fire when four buildings burned. In 1907, city ordinance established the Las Vegas Volunteer Fire Department (LVFD). As the city grew, so did the requests for service from LVFD so on Aug. 1, 1942, the department hired its first full time members: one fire chief and 12 firefighters. In 1999 city ordinance changed the name of the dep

artment from Las Vegas Fire Department to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue. Today Las Vegas Fire & Rescue (LVFR) protects a city that covers 133.25 square miles, nearly 610,000 residents and several million visitors each year. Las Vegas Fire & Rescue is an I.S.O. Class One fire department as well as an accredited agency by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International. The department provides all fire suppression, prevention and education programs in the city as well as paramedic emergency medical services to the residents and visitors of the Las Vegas community. In addition, the department also has a Bomb Squad, Hazardous Materials Team and Technical Rescue Team that provides services for the city as well as the rest of Clark County. The Fire Alarm Office / Fire & Medical 9-1-1 Center is also located at Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

Today, August 26th at 3:00 p.m. Las Vegas Fire & Rescue received an emergency call for an incident on Sacramento Dr. – a two-story residential structure.

The caller reported a house on fire. Dispatch confirmed everyone was out of the home. The first unit arrived five minutes after their assignment. Crews arrived to find a vehicle on fire in the backyard, and the fire had spread to the neighboring home.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue and Clark County Fire Department crews initially used defensive strategies due to fire conditions, then switched to offensive strategies. A knockdown was called at 3:24 p.m. Additional resources were called to the scene to support the incident.

One citizen was transported to UMC care and is in stable condition. Additionally, one firefighter was transported out of an abundance of care. Board-up services were called to board up 9 windows, 1 door, 14 windows, and two garage doors.

American Red Cross was called to support 5 adults, 4 children, and 5 dogs. Unfortunately, 3 cats and 1 dog passed away during the incident.

More help from Southern Nevada to Northern Nevada as that part of the state continues to deal with problems from wildfires. Due to storms in the last few days have started dozens of brush fires across Elko County, teams have mobilized to support communities in that area. Elko, Wells, and Spring Creek. The most significant of these fires is the Oxley Fire outside Wells, NV, currently over 11,000 acres and just 5% contained.

Crews from the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, Clark County Fire Department, Henderson Fire Department, Boulder City Fire Department and City of North Las Vegas Fire Department will respondto 911 calls occurring across Elko County in a deployment expected to last up to 14 days.

Resources include 2 Battalion Chiefs, 5 Engines, 2 Water Tenders, 1 Mechanic, and 1 Communication Technician. These multi agency deployments strengthen the relationship between departments in Southern Nevada, as well as demonstrate the commitment to emergency service statewide. Wishing them safe travels and safety while on the job.

On Sunday, our local Nevada Task Force 1 was deployed under a state of Nevada activation to support response and recovery efforts for the Hawk Fire in Washoe County. This team is one of the 28 Federal Urban Search and Rescue teams and normally deploys to natural disasters nationwide. The task force includes members from all the valley fire departments, as well as doctors and structural engineers from our community.

The team deployed as a mission-ready package to support canine-assisted searches. The team is ready to support Washoe County and expects to start conducting searches tomorrow morning, continuing all week.

The Hawk Fire has grown rapidly and is now more than 15,051 acres with 27% containment. Multiple structures have been damaged or destroyed, and thousands of people have been evacuated.

We wish this multiagency team safe travels and hope their work helps the community recover from this devastating fire.
