In a new study, New Mexico Highlands University and New Mexico Forest and Watershed Restoration Institute researchers examined how effective forest treatments were on small parcels (10 acres or less) within the Hermit's Peak-Calf Canyon burned area. What they found: Even small treatments made a significant impact on how fire behaved on those lands.

For small acreage landowners, the message is clear: The work you do matters.

For land managers, this means treatments can be even more micro-targeted to high-risk areas. For New Mexico as a whole, this means every project counts as another meaningful step toward more resilient landscapes.

Do you have a private well in Mora, San Miguel, or Taos County? If your property was impacted by the 2022 Hermits Peak–Calf Canyon Wildfire, the New Mexico Environment Department is offering FREE private well water testing for eligible residents. Testing is focused on groundwater wells used for drinking and looks for heavy metals and other contaminants, including PFAS. Requests are being accepted through October 2026, as funding allows.

Join the Hermit's Peak Watershed Alliance and Quivira for a collaborative, field-based workshop on a private ranch along the Sapello River. Participants will work alongside restoration practitioners to construct low-tech, process-based erosion control structures within an ephemeral channel — drainages that flow only during rainfall or snowmelt events.

Participants will learn how restoration treatments such as log structures, one-rock dams, constructed log jams, contour felling, and upland erosion control practices help restore watershed function, improve water quality, and reduce downstream flood impacts.
