The judiciary plays a vital role in our democracy, and the judges we elect to preside over legal matters make decisions that profoundly affect individuals, families, and communities. It is a responsibility that should never be taken lightly.

Fortunately, our guest speakers today exemplify the qualities we hope to see in every judge—intelligence, integrity, fairness, thoughtfulness, and a deep commitment to justice. The decisions they make each day impact Nevada families and help ensure that our legal system serves all who come before it with dignity and respect.

Today, we are honored to welcome Judge Anna Albertson of the Eighth Judicial District Court, Department 11, and Judge Dawn Throne of the Eighth Judicial District Court, Family Division Department U. They join us to share their experiences on the bench, their dedication to the law, and their perspectives on the important role judges play in our communities. They will also remind us why every vote matters when selecting those entrusted with administering justice.

As members of the Women’s Democratic Club of Clark County, we are pleased to welcome Judges Albertson and Throne and thank them for sharing their judicial experiences with us today.

We are saddened by the loss of our longtime member, John Kubota.
John was such a happy person, and his smile could light up a room. An engineer by profession, he built a successful engineering company right here in Las Vegas. Yet what we will remember and cherish most is not his professional accomplishments, but the loving and caring man he was throughout his life.
John quietly devoted himself to helping others. He would feed those experiencing homelessness, making sure they were not forgotten and helping them feel valued and whole again. His heart was full of compassion, and he never sought recognition or praise for his good deeds. To John, helping others was simply the right thing to do.

He was a gentle soul who always saw the best in people. He was a wonderful friend who listened with genuine interest and shared in both the joys and sorrows of life. As a longtime member of Women's Democratic Club, John enjoyed attending our meetings and spending time with friends, especially mixing it up with the union members during lunch.

We hope Regina and his children know how deeply John was loved not only by his family, but also by his many friends and by those whose lives he touched through his kindness and generosity. He truly lived the values and teachings of scripture through his actions every day.

We will miss your smile, John, but most of all, we will miss seeing you walk through the doors of Women's Democratic Club, greeting us with a hug and that warm smile that made everyone feel welcome.

May the angels bring you home, and may your memory be for a blessing.

One of the most important things we do is provide financial assistance to students pursuing higher education or trade school opportunities in Nevada. Through our Renee Diamond Scholarship and Carol Chesnut Law Scholarship programs, deserving students are selected by our Scholarship Committees to receive support toward their educational goals and future careers.

The scholarship recipients are honored and presented with their awards at our Women’s Equality Day Luncheon in August. If you know a young Democratic adult preparing to attend a college, university, law school, or trade school, please encourage them to submit an application and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

Women's Democratic Club of Clark County honors and remembers the brave men and women of our military who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Their devotion to country, to democracy, and to the freedoms we cherish will never be forgotten.

On this Memorial Day, we pause to reflect on the courage, selflessness, and patriotism of those who gave their lives so that future generations could live in liberty. Their sacrifice is the foundation upon which our democracy stands.

Especially during challenging times, when our President has no respect for military, we remain deeply grateful to all who have served and sacrificed in defense of our nation and its people. Without their bravery and commitment, we would not enjoy the freedoms and opportunities we have today.

May we always honor their memory not only with words, but by protecting the democratic ideals for which they fought.

Mayors Shelley Berkley and Jan Jones Blackhurst are extraordinary women whose leadership has left an enduring imprint on our community and across the State of Nevada. With a steadfast “can do” spirit, they have each brought vision, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to public service—qualities that have not only shaped policy, but strengthened the very fabric of Las Vegas.

As pioneers and trailblazers, they broke barriers and redefined what leadership looks like in our city. Their work led to meaningful, structural progress—enhancing the quality of life for residents, elevating the experience of visitors, and prioritizing the safety and well-being of all who call Las Vegas home. Their legacy is not just in what they accomplished, but in the opportunities they created for those who will follow in their footsteps.

We extend our sincere thanks to Mayors Shelley Berkley and Jan Jones Blackhurst for presenting such a dynamic and engaging program today at the Women's Democratic Club of Clark County. Our members and guests had the privilege of hearing two extraordinary women share their personal journeys, public service, leadership experiences, and insights into politics and community engagement.

The conversation was both educational and enjoyable, filled with wisdom, humor, and inspiration. We are grateful for the time, candor, and energy they brought to our Club and appreciate their continued commitment to strengthening our community and encouraging civic participation.

Thank you, Marta Schmitt for your photos.
