We must remember the profound origin of Veterans Day, born from the courageous hearts of our brothers and sisters in arms in the U.K., who first commemorated it as Armistice Day, later evolving into Remembrance Day in the U.K. and other nations. Similar to our Memorial Day, it serves as a poignant reminder of the ultimate sacrifices made by countless heroes who have paved the way for our freedom.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month holds immense significance, symbolizing the moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front and is universally associated with the remembrance of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in war. This first modern world conflict mobilized over 70 million people, resulting in between 9 and 13 million casualties, with as many as one-third of them laid to rest in unknown graves. The allied nations chose this day and time to honor their war dead, and we continue this tradition today.

The distinction may seem subtle, but to those who have served worldwide, each day holds profound meaning: Memorial Day is a day to remember and honor those who have given their last full measure of devotion; Veterans Day is a celebration of gratitude for those who have served; and Armed Forces Day recognizes the unwavering dedication of our active-duty service members. By observing these days, we ensure that the bravery and sacrifices of our military personnel are forever etched in our hearts.

Furthermore, a more recent tradition many of us proudly participate in is wearing red every Friday to Remember Everyone Deployed (R.E.D.), until they all return home. Though we may dream of the day when all our 'Policemen of the World' (the U.S. Military) come home, this weekly reminder keeps the memory of our courageous warriors who have taken the oath to defend our values, wherever duty calls, forever alive.

The term “former service member” is defined as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces who is separated, retired or discharged. The term “Veteran” means a person who served in the active military, naval, air or space service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable as defined in 38 U.S.C. § 101(2).

November is a very special month for all veterans of our great country. It is a time when we need to reflect on our service and our accomplishments. While we are recognized this month with the observance of Veterans Day, we should also take the time to recognize others who have served our nation. We should recognize and support our first responders as well. Their service and sacrifice is as important as our service in the military. Shake the hand of every veteran and first responder you meet and thank them for their service. If someone is thoughtful enough to thank you for your service, make sure you respond and tell them thank you for caring.

However, Veteran’s Day did not start out as a salute to all veterans. It was first known as Armistice Day, a day to commemorate and remember the end of the First World War on the eleventh day of the eleventh month at 11 a.m. in 1918. While the following years were observed as Armistice Day on November 11th, the United States Congress did not pass the congressional act to make Armistice Day a legal holiday until 1938. With the conclusion of World War II and the Korean War, there was a push to recognize all service men and women that had served. So in 1954, Congress passed a bill replacing “Armistice” with the term ”Veterans” to honor all veterans that have served all of our armed services.

November is also a time for us to take time out of our busy schedule and vote. On Tuesday, November 5th, we have a chance to make a difference in our political system. Regardless of your political affiliation, your lot in life, your economic condition, or your personal convictions, voting is your right and responsibility. We, as Americans, have a moral responsibility to select representatives of our local, state, and federal governments to make decisions on our behalf. The real meaning of this process is that at each political cycle we can change our minds on those candidates if these representatives have failed our trust. So, go and Vote! It is your Right!
