It’s fall, y'all, and it's time to read and embrace all things spooky, scary, and Halloween-y.

Starting with an adult horror novel about the end of the world and a convent.

The Unworthy by Agustina Bazterrica

From her cell in a mysterious convent, a woman writes the story of her life in whatever she can find—discarded ink, dirt, and even her own blood. A lower member of the Sacred Sisterhood, deemed an unworthy, she dreams of ascending to the ranks of the Enlightened at the center of the convent and of pleasing the foreboding Superior Sister. Outside, the world is plagued by catastrophe—cities are submerged underwater, electricity and the internet are nonexistent, and bands of survivors fight and forage in a cruel, barren landscape. Inside, the narrator is controlled, punished, but safe.

But when a stranger makes her way past the convent walls, joining the ranks of the unworthy, she forces the narrator to consider her long-buried past—and what she may be overlooking about the Enlightened. As the two women grow closer, the narrator is increasingly haunted by questions about her own past, the environmental future, and her present life inside the convent. How did she get to the Sacred Sisterhood? Why can’t she remember her life before? And what really happens when a woman is chosen as one of the Enlightened?

What is a General Obligation Bond?

A GO Bond is a voter-approved funding tool that allows the City of Las Cruces to fund major capital projects.

On Nov. 3, voters will consider a GO Bond of up to $26 million for the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library Renovation and Expansion Project. The bond would use the property tax capacity already in place, allowing voters to decide whether to fund the project without increasing the property tax rate.

Arts and Crafts Camp is a weeklong program for children ages 6-12 during Fall Break, starting Monday, October 5, at our Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, 11-2 PM.

To accommodate more kiddos this year, all crafts will be open on a drop-in basis, which means kiddos will not be expected to arrive at the start of a craft or stay for its full duration. We do ask that kiddos arrive at the craft room before 1:30 PM so that they have a chance to complete the craft for the day. Children arriving after 1:30 PM will not be permitted to start the daily craft as we must begin cleaning up.

At the end of the week, on Friday, October 9, we will host an art fair to showcase all the wonderful pieces each child made.

Parents or caregivers are expected to stay for the entire program each day; we cannot host children without parent or caregiver supervision.
