It's the time of year for skeletons, ghosts, goblins, and all other assorted frights. Halloween is a fun distraction for kids and adults, but what's really scary is that almost half (46%) of Las Cruces' population lives at or below 80% of the median income. 80% qualifies to apply for a Mesilla Valley Public Housing Authority affordable home. Early voting starts today! People who take advantage of it are much like our Housing Choice Voucher tenants who sign up for our Family Self Sufficiency program. They know time is their greatest asset, and using it to train and invest in themselves is a one-way ticket out of HCV life. Family Self Sufficiency program is FREE and open to HCV tenants in good standing.

Sunrise on a hiking trail is breathtaking. Want to see? Starting next week, Cruces Parks and Recreation has a new hiking trail each week, and it's free to join. You'll need to register before each hike and bring your own water, proper footwear, and sunblock. All hikes start at 7:30 am. It's National Walk & Roll to School Day today! Look out today for kids of all ages heading out on foot and by bike. Started in 1997, it's all about creating safer, more walkable routes to school, building a sense of community, and inspiring others through activity and positivity. As many as 40 countries have participated.

The Morning Star Food Pantry is happening tomorrow at Morning Star Las Cruces from 9 am to 11 am. Also, this upcoming Sunday, Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico will hold a pop-up drive-thru starting at 8:00 am at the Real Life Church. This will only operate for as long as food supplies last. First come, first served.
