Today I stood outside a home that was changed in an instant. Last night’s storm ripped a tree straight out of the sidewalk concrete and sent it crashing through a 12 year old boy’s bedroom. He was in the room when it happened. By grace, he survived without severe physical injuries, but the fear and shock on his parents’ faces told the real story. This was traumatic. This will take time. No family should ever have to face something like this.

I stood with the husband and wife as they tried to process what happened. Their cousin and neighbors were there with them, still shaken by what they saw. Nature can be unpredictable, and moments like this remind us how quickly life can change.

The Red Cross and our County team were on site with this family from the moment we arrived, and we will continue to support them through the aftermath. They are part of our community. They are part of our heart.

Prince George’s County, today we made history. After more than 35 years of transit service, we officially launched GoPGC, our modern, fare free, rider focused transit system built for the future of this County. Touring the bus and celebrating at the ribbon cutting reminded me why this work matters.

GoPGC brings Sunday service, smarter routes, and a better rider experience shaped by real community feedback. This system connects residents to jobs, healthcare, businesses, school, and everyday life in a way that is safe, reliable, and accessible. This is County transit, built for every resident, every day.

This launch is part of our larger vision to build walkable, connected communities and prepare for major projects coming to Prince George’s County, including The Sphere at MGM and the FBI headquarters in Greenbelt. We are expanding equity, empowering our workforce, strengthening our economy, and elevating quality of life for every resident.

We are not finished yet. With GoPGC, we are moving forward, headed in the right direction, and building the transit system Prince George’s County deserves.

Today we welcomed 10‑year‑old Joey Stanger into our police family. PGPD, Sheriffs, MD State Police, and Fire/EMS lined the driveway as police vehicles escorted Joey and his family in.

Joey is fighting Osteosarcoma with a courage that moved all of us, even after losing his leg. Watching him smile as officers saluted him brought tears to my eyes. I spent time with Joey and his family, and gave his sister a necklace to honor the strength she’s shown her brother. Joey is now officially part of our team, and I’m grateful I could be there with him today.

Last night reminded me why I created the Elevate Civic Academy in the first place.

I wanted every resident in Prince George’s County to have a clear, confident understanding of how their county government works; not from the sidelines, but from the inside. I wanted people to feel empowered, informed, and connected to the decisions that shape their daily lives. That vision became a 13‑week journey that has transformed how our community engages with government.

And last night, that vision reached a new height.

With over 300 guests gathered in celebration, we honored 118 graduates of the Class of 2026; residents who committed themselves to learning, listening, and leading. They didn’t just complete a program; they stepped forward as ambassadors for their communities, ready to elevate their neighborhoods with knowledge and purpose.

To our graduates:
Your commitment inspires me. You invested your time, your energy, and your voice in understanding how our County moves forward. You are now part of a growing network of leaders who will help strengthen the civic fabric of Prince George’s County.

Congratulations, Class of 2026.

You are informed. You are empowered. And you are ready to elevate Prince George’s County.
