HERITAGE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES GRAND OPENING OF NEW REPUBLIC OF THE RIO GRANDE EXHIBIT
The Webb County Heritage Foundation will host a Grand Opening and ribbon-cutting event for a new, permanent exhibit on the history of the Republic of the Rio Grande on Saturday, November 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Republic of the Rio Grande Museum, 1005 Zaragoza St. (next to La Posada Hotel).
The exhibit, which tells the story of an independent republic that claimed Laredo as its capital, marks the most significant chapter in Laredo’s story and gives this area its claim to a “seventh flag.”
“After numerous delays due to the COVID pandemic, we are happy to be opening this beautiful new historical display for the public,” said Margarita Araiza, WCHF Executive Director. The exhibit was made possible through the generous support of the City of Laredo - Government, the Raymond Martin Gutierrez and Melba P. Gutierrez Charitable Trust, the Guadalupe and Lila Martinez Trust, La Posada Hotel, and numerous individual donors.
According to local tradition, the building served as the capitol of the Republic of the Rio Grande in 1840. The Republic of the Rio Grande was created by a constitutional convention on January 7, 1840, and attempted to unite Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, and Coahuila y Tejas. After several battles, the Republic’s federalists were defeated by the armies of the Mexican General Mariano Arista. The republic declared itself an independent country for 283 days, making Laredo and the surrounding area the only portion of Texas to have existed under seven flags.
The new exhibit includes text panels in English and Spanish with some interactivity; a timeline of events; background history on the reason for the separation from Mexico; a map of the area of the Republic of the Rio Grande with interactive audio; information about the republic’s flag and capitol building; displays on major figures of the Republic; why the Republic was so short-lived; and the story of beheading of Colonel Antonio Zapata.
The Republic of the Rio Grande Museum is located at 1005 Zaragoza St. next to La Posada Hotel. Museum hours are Tues. to Sat. from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission on Tuesdays is free. For more information, please contact the Webb County Heritage Foundation at 956-727-0977.
