It is with great saddness that we announce the sudden passing of one of our own. As an active member and firefighter for over 20 years, with 13 as the BLVVFD fire chief, Richard provided so much friendship, mentoring and leadership, we find ourselves with a huge void in his place. We all will miss you greatly Richard. Rest in peace now Brother, we’ll take it from here.

Press Release: 12102023
Type: Search and Rescue

On the night of Saturday, December 9th, 2023, dispatchers with the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office were notified of a stranded hunter near the Medicine Bow National Forest.

Despite howling winds and whiteout conditions, Search and Rescue volunteers mobilized from across the county and responded without hesitation.

With incident command support from the sheriff’s office and air assistance from Classic Air Medical, emergency response personnel were able to locate the hypothermic subject and safely transport them to the Memorial Hospital of Carbon County, only to be immediately redirected to another Search and Rescue, this time in the vicinity of County Road 505, consisting of numerous stranded subjects and vehicles.

Although SAR personnel had already been active for hours in the bitter cold and howling winds, they immediately responded to the newly reported search, foregoing any rest or resupply, and were able to locate the subjects and transport them to safety.

Without the dedication and expertise displayed by our SAR volunteers last night and early this morning, these two incidents could have easily resulted in tragic endings.

Our extreme gratitude goes out to all of our SAR volunteers county wide as well as Classic Air Medical, who are always willing to help out on any SAR operations.

Thank you all!

**Mason Fire Update**

November 20th 2023 - 3:30 pm

The Mason Fire is currently 90% contained. The fire has gone underground into the cottonwood root system. Since the extent of fire spread within the root system is unknown, declaration of full containment may not occur.

Albany County fire resources have secured the perimeter where possible and will continue to monitor the area. Due to the nature of this fire, it is difficult to locate where it has traveled, meaning that smoke and fire could reappear under the right conditions. If smoke is seen in the area, please contact 9-1-1 immediately.

At this time, the cause of the fire is undetermined and is under investigation.

Big Laramie Valley VFD was composed of two main stations and two substations. Station 1 is our main station located at 2004 HWY 230 near the Laramie Water Treatment Plant. Station 4 was our second main station located at 3987 HWY 230 near the WYCOLO Lodge. The members of the Station 4 Main Station decided to form their own Volunteer Fire Department and are now the WYCO VFD. The new WYCO VFD responds to wildfires and assists with motor vehicle accident and medical calls during the summer months. WYCO VFD doesn’t have any licensed EMTs or structure qualified firefighters yet so BLVFD will continue to have responsibilities in the WYCO area. Big Laramie VFD will continue to respond to all structure fires, motor vehicle accidents involving injury, and medical calls within the WYCO response area year round and will be the main fire department in the area during the winter months. WYCO VFD will take the lead during the summer months on wildfires within their response area. The WYCO VFD response area starts at the Chimney Park Boy Scout camp parking area on HWY 230 and ends at the Colorado State line.
