9/11: Memorial Day

Today Army and Air Force Cadets participated in the 9/11 stair climb to remember those that never made it back home. They completed 5 laps of bleachers where the total climb represented going up one of the Twin Towers. It was a humbling tradition that we are grateful to be apart of.

Thank you Laramie Fire Department, Search and Rescue, President Reeves, and all those that came out to join us!

Basic Week: Days 4 & 5

Howdy!

To recap the end of Basic Week, cadets started Thursday with breakfast alongside their senior mentors, building relationships and establishing connections with experienced cadets who can serve as guides throughout their college and ROTC experience.

Cadets also learned about the special schools and teams available through ROTC, providing opportunities to challenge themselves, develop new skills, and distinguish themselves as future Army officers. The day continued with a promotion ceremony recognizing cadets for their accomplishments and commitment to the Cowboy Battalion. To finish Thursday, cadets received an introduction to the Cowboy Battalion cannon crew, with a live demo of the cannon for the cadets.

To conclude Basic Week, cadets traveled to Medicine Bow National Forest and hiked to the peak (12,018 ft) along Lewis Lake Trail. The hike gave cadets an opportunity to strengthen bonds with their peers while sharing a challenging and memorable experience together.

Basic Week may be over, but this is just the beginning. Stay tuned for what the Cowboy Battalion has in store!

Basic Week Day 3:

Today, contracting cadets put their physical readiness to the test by completing the Army Fitness Test (AFT) in the morning. Cadets then stepped outside their comfort zones by rappelling from the University of Wyoming parking garage, developing discipline, attention to detail, and trust in their training.

In the afternoon, cadets had the opportunity to experience a UH-60 (Black Hawk) flight from the 211th Aviation Regiment, giving them a firsthand look at Army aviation and a unique opportunity to learn more about the Army beyond ROTC.

Cadets finished the day with dinner provided by the Wyoming National Guard and learned about opportunities to serve in the National Guard while pursuing their education and military careers.

Thank you to our rappel masters, 211th Aviation Regiment, and the Wyoming National Guard for supporting our cadets and providing these opportunities.

Basic Week Day 2:

Yesterday, Cowboy Battalion cadets continued Basic Week by familiarizing themselves with the Army Fitness Test (AFT) and Physical Readiness Training (PRT). Physical fitness is an important part of developing future officers, allowing cadets to build discipline, resilience, and the ability to lead by example.

Cadets also had the opportunity to hear from Major General Robert A. Borcherding, who shared advice on becoming better officers and well-rounded individuals. The day concluded with cadets becoming familiar with the University of Wyoming campus and learning about various campus services, support resources, and opportunities available to support their success both inside and outside of ROTC.

Thank you to Major General Robert A. Borcherding and UW Veterans Affairs for supporting our cadets. We look forward to continuing Basic Week and preparing our cadets for the semester ahead!

Yesterday, Cowboy Battalion kicked off Basic Week with new cadets conducting equipment layouts and drawing gear for the upcoming semester. Cadets learned the standards outlined in AR 670-1 and familiarized themselves with proper uniform and equipment standards.

Cadets also reviewed Army customs and courtesies, building a foundation of professionalism, discipline, and respect as they begin their development as future Army officers and leaders.

We’re excited to welcome our new cadets to the Cowboy Battalion and look forward to what the rest of Basic Week has to offer!

Last week was our annual Awards Lab! Local organizations, alumni, and community members join us to recognize the outstanding efforts and achievements of our cadets. We are very appreciative of their generosity.
We welcomed several distinguished visitors including Governor Mark Gordon, who administered an oath for our new group of contacting cadets. We are very thankful to the members of the Wyoming Army National Guard, including Major General Porter, who also joined us.
Congratulations to all of our cadets, and here’s to another year of excellence!

Last week, our MS4’s headed to Dubois, WY to visit the National Museum of Military Vehicles. Cadets spent the day examining, exploring, and reading about the history of the U.S. military. They had the awesome opportunity to climb into several real vehicles! A huge thank you to the entire Museum team for being generous hosts! Last week we celebrated our annual joint Military Ball with our teammates from ! Cadets gathered with their friends and family. We were joined by several special guests including Colonel Jeremy Cotton, an alumni of Detachment 940. His shared stories reminded our cadets what it means to be a Cowboy. By this, he means, leaders with unyielding courage, unbeatable optimism, and fearless independence. Thank you to our distinguished visitors, family, and friends for joining us. DAY FOUR OF JFTX!!!

We are proud to carry on the tradition of a joint exercise with our teammates from . Each year, our cadets prove why this training is so valuable. Their limits are pushed by weather and terrain, but they never quit. That is the Mountain West standard. Best of luck to the MSIIIs at Advanced Camp this summer! Congratulations to our cadets, cadre, and faculty who were recognized for their outstanding contributions. See you again next year!
