The month of April has flown by, yet it was a great joy to support our neighbors, partners, and collaborators in building a city for all of us to thrive.

Here are some highlights of the work- from the Greater Lansing Food Bank, to The Poetry Room Youth Slam, to the incredible work of the Eastside Cottage Development, to supporting our High School Sports Teams and our beloved Lansing Lugnuts.

The future of Lansing is bright!

Tonight I had so much fun attending Advocacy Scholars Night at Michigan State University School of Social Work as a guest speaker! As an alum, it was great hearing from students about their policy passions, their advocacy projects, and the dreams they have to make our world better and more just for all. I was honored to speak and share my insights and lessons learned too. Above all, my alma mater and my future fellow social workers inspired me to stay “ragefully curious” and to be the instrument of change everywhere I go. Go Green!

The construction of the Ovation Center for Music and Arts and future home of the Lansing Public Media Center is underway, and it was so cool to see the progress! Lansing is unique to have such resources, and the incredible staff that run City TV and teach classes for Lansing residents are truly special. I can’t wait to see what creative work is dreamt up and brought to life in these future spaces. 🎵🎤🎧

Across the city- from Tecumseh River to Miller Road, from Harry’s Place to the Eastside- there are delicious and hoppin’ spots to choose from for your Friday night Fish Fry. Last night, I had so much fun serving at Cristo Rey! So great to see so many friends and neighbors out together. Thanks for having me! 🍽️

Congratulations to Cafecito Caliente on a great Latino Business Conexión of Michigan event. So good to connect with small business owners and neighbors, to celebrate successes and highlight civic engagement. Most of all, it’s wonderful to be in community with each other, and enjoy what makes Lansing special- the people!

Today is a school snow day, but the work of the city never stops! One month into my service as an At-Large Councilwoman, and I could not be more grateful for my colleagues, our incredible city staff, and most of all, the people of Lansing. Showing up and putting in the work everyday for all of us is an honor, and I’m just getting started.

The best way to contact my office is by email or phone. Thank you to those who have reached out this first month, I’m excited to work together to make Lansing the best it can be now and for years to come. Let’s do this!

I was honored to attend the MLK Day Celebration at the Lansing Center today alongside community members from across our city.

Dr. Diane Nash’s speech was both inspiring and challenging. She reminded us that loving humanity means refusing to be passive and that standing up for our communities is not optional. Her message to younger generations was especially powerful. The civil rights movement worked to create a better world for those who came after them. Now, that responsibility belongs to us.

The celebration also featured student essay and scholarship awardees, additional speakers, and an uplifting performance by the Detroit Youth Choir. A meaningful reminder that Dr. King’s legacy lives on through community, courage, and collective action.

All it takes is one person to change the makeup of the room, to inspire others to participate, engage, and be proud of their community. I have never seen the Board Room so packed and filled with so much love and joy!

Tonight, history was made as the intelligent, highly capable, talented, and beautiful young woman Aurora Lemieux-McKissic, our newest Trustee on the Lansing School District Board of Education, took her oath of office.

As a Lansing resident, I am so inspired and excited for her leadership. It means we are moving forward. As one of her former teachers, I am in awe and humbled to witness her journey. I have always said I cannot WAIT until our students run the world!

When we courageously step up for our community, when we are not intimidated by others, when we believe in ourselves even when we face uncertainty, we compel others to do the same.

Congratulations Aurora! You are already making the world and our Lansing a better place. We’ve got your back!
