National Charter Schools Week

Today, I was honored to welcome students to the Capitol in celebration of National Charter Schools Week. In the Upper Peninsula, we’re proud of the education opportunities at Copper Island Academy. I only wish it were easier for more of our UP students to make the trip down to Lansing, but we’re thinking of you all and grateful for the impact you’re making in your communities every day.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Mother’s Day can mean many different things to different people. Whether you’re celebrating a mother, remembering one, or recognizing someone who has filled that role in your life, I hope today offers a chance to express appreciation and connection in whatever way feels right.

To all the mothers and mother figures in our community—thank you for the care, strength, and love you share so generously every day. You make a lasting difference.

Pictured is my mother, Evelyn Markkanen, and my wife, Jane Markkanen. These two women have truly shaped me into who I am today, and I couldn’t be more grateful for them.

Recently, I had the opportunity to present to the Marquette Ambassadors, along with the rest of the UP delegation. This group advocates for Marquette, but most of the issues are common to the UP. We talked a lot about ways we are working to create energy independence and lower the cost of high heating bills. We shared our work with MI Doc and other programs that are working towards bringing more health care professionals to the UP. Representative Prestin talked about his work to expand ambulance services across the UP. I am proud to be part of the UP delegation that is working towards making our home an even better place to live.

I was invited to read to a Head Start classroom at Ontonagon Schools last Friday, and it was a joy to share a love of literacy with the young students. Spending that time together and seeing them connect with the story was a highlight of my week. It was truly encouraging to see their excitement and engagement!
