The Capitol Commission and staff are saddened to hear of the passing of Joe Schwarz who served in the Michigan Senate, 1987-2002. Schwartz was an active supporter of the Capitol’s restoration and chaired the Capitol Committee, 1991-1992. These photos show exterior glass panels being installed on the north and south wings during the 1987 to 1992 restoration. Each new piece had to be lifted to the roof by crane.

Michigan’s Civil War veterans and their families gathered regularly for memorials and reunions. This 1878 photo shows veterans of the 20th Infantry Regiment gathered on the steps of the newly built Capitol.

Many of the women who broke barriers in Michigan’s State Capitol were also educators! Director of Education & History Valerie Marvin recently spoke at the Scott Club, a 143 year old cultural center, about Senator Eva McCall Hamilton, Michigan’s first female legislator. Hamilton trained as a teacher, belonged to a Grand Rapids educational society, and introduced a bill to create a teacher pension system in 1921.

The Capitol’s glass floor restoration is on schedule to be completed this summer! 🏛️

Last month, work moved into the southeast section of the rotunda. By the end of the project, an estimated 697 glass tiles will be replaced with historically accurate replicas.

Thanks to everyone who came out this morning for flower planting day! Every spring, Capitol staff and volunteers plant thousands of annuals in the Victorian-style carpet beds on the east lawn. This year the flowers are red, white, and blue for America 250!
