If someone comes to me tomorrow with a funding challenge, it might be a year before we can act and pass policy to help. The Mott Foundation and organizations like it have the flexibility to respond to community needs immediately, something the system simply doesn't allow us to do.

Today, on International Day of Charity, I want to celebrate partnerships that blend the stability of public sector with the nimbleness of charitable giving that create real solutions when communities need them most.

Thank you to every charitable organization and donor across our community who doesn't wait to make a difference.

It doesn’t get much more local than this!

Our family was proud to purchase a pig at this year’s Genesee County Fair. It’s a great way to support the young people raising livestock in our community while knowing exactly where our food comes from.

Grateful for our local farmers, our 4-H and agricultural community, and everyone helping teach the next generation where our food comes from.

Genesee County voters recently renewed the Arts Education & Cultural Enrichment Millage, continuing access to incredible arts, culture, education, and recreation opportunities across our community.

That includes:

• 50% off admission to Longway Planetarium
• Discounted tickets and classes through the Flint Institute of Music
• Arts and cultural programming through 20+ organizations supported by the Greater Flint Arts Council

• Affordable programming at The New McCree Theatre

This millage puts arts and culture within reach — so get out and experience what Genesee County has to offer!

I had the opportunity to tour the new addition at Berston Field House and take in some of the history preserved throughout the original building.

I was proud to help secure dollars in the state budget for Berston to support these renovations, and I look forward to seeing the completed project unveiled. Special thank you to my friends, James Avery and LaToya English for the tour, and for letting me step into the boxing ring where so many Flint natives got their start.

I’m honored to receive the Frank J. Kelley Justice Award, the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan’s highest honor.

I’ve been fortunate to work alongside prosecutors, law enforcement, advocates, and community leaders committed to keeping Michiganders safe. That includes our work to fund and make permanent Michigan’s High-Crime Community Support Grant, giving communities with high rates of violent crime more resources to investigate and prosecute cases.

Thank you to PAAM for this incredible honor.

Earlier this month, we celebrated Farmers Market Week, and it seemed only fitting to also spotlight the Black-owned businesses at the market, especially since August is Black Owned Business Month.

These incredible vendors bring so much talent, flavor, and creativity to our community:

TEE’S Plentiful Salads
Mr Prince Gourmet
810 Tings
Brook’s Tea Inc.
Snacky Brown LLC
Biotiq Skincare
Ebony Gemstone Company

Be sure to stop by the Flint Farmers' Market and support our local entrepreneurs.

Today, on Women’s Equality Day, we’re proud to celebrate the women whose leadership continues to move our community forward. Congratulations to those being recognized at the annual Women’s Equality Luncheon, including Lansing Fire Chief Carrie Edwards-Clemons, Capt. Jillian Macey, Nancy Edwards, and emcee Courtney Bennett. We’re grateful for all they contribute to Genesee County and beyond.

We’re sorry to miss the opportunity to celebrate alongside so many friends and community leaders today, but our office is standing in solidarity with the striking nurses at Henry Ford Genesys and will not attend events at the Genesys Banquet Center while the labor dispute continues.

We wish the organizers and everyone attending a wonderful Women’s Equality Day luncheon. Here’s a throwback to last year’s celebration in Flint!

While I’ve already shared the exciting news that Rx Kids is expanding to more communities across Michigan, today I wanted to share how it all began.

This program started right here in Flint, built on a simple idea that when we invest directly in moms and babies during those critical first months, the returns last for generations.

I was honored to guest author a piece telling that story, from Flint to a program now reaching 100,000 babies across Michigan.

Give it a read: https://thedepartmentofwhatworks.substack.com/p/rx-kids-started-in-flint-now-its
