Mount Clemens, MI – Under the leadership of Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office continues its relentless mission to protect seniors from criminals who target vulnerable members of our community. Over the last four years, Prosecutor Lucido and his office have delivered more than 230 S.C.A.M.S. (Stopping Crimes Against Macomb Seniors) presentations throughout Macomb County — an unmatched effort demonstrating his unwavering commitment to senior safety.
No one in Macomb County is working harder to protect seniors than Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
Rather than waiting for seniors to come to him, Prosecutor Lucido has made it his mission to meet seniors where they are — visiting senior centers, retirement communities, libraries, VFW halls, community centers, churches, and Senior EXPOs across the county. His message is direct: prevent, protect, and prosecute.
“Protecting our seniors is not just a duty — it is a responsibility,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido. “Our seniors deserve to live safely, with dignity and peace of mind. Criminals who target the elderly are cowards, and my office will aggressively pursue anyone who exploits, abuses, or scams our aging residents.”
As stated by Eaton County Prosecutor Doug Lloyd, “Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido has developed an outstanding program to help seniors in Macomb County avoid scams, and it is a model worth building on.”
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office has made elder protection a top priority through its dedicated Senior Crimes and Consumer Protection Unit. In addition to aggressively prosecuting offenders, the office continues to expand outreach and prevention efforts to arm seniors with the information they need to avoid becoming victims.
As part of the initiative, the Prosecutor’s Office distributes its informational booklet, “S.C.A.M.S. – Stopping Crimes Against Macomb Seniors,” which educates seniors about the many forms of fraud and exploitation targeting older adults. Topics include identity theft, telemarketing fraud, internet scams, phishing schemes, home improvement fraud, caregiver theft, banking scams, and financial exploitation.
Prosecutor Lucido is warning residents to remain vigilant against several recent scams circulating throughout the community, including:
• A fake flyer titled “Setting Up Lockbox/Garage Code with Macomb County Dispatch”
• Fraudulent “GEEK Squad” invoice and auto-renewal emails
• Fake banking or loan approval emails
• Callers posing as relatives in jail requesting money
“These scams are designed to create panic, confusion, and fear,” Lucido stated. “Never give personal information, banking information, passwords, or money to anyone over the phone or through email unless you are absolutely certain who you are dealing with.”
Elder abuse can take many forms — physical, emotional, financial, and neglect — and it often goes unnoticed or unreported. Prosecutor Lucido emphasized that community awareness and reporting are critical to protecting vulnerable seniors and holding offenders accountable.
“It is vitally important that the public remain vigilant and report elder abuse,” Lucido said. “The only way abusers can be stopped is if people speak up. My office will continue fighting every day to ensure seniors are protected and those responsible are brought to justice.”
Prosecutor Lucido also recognized Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys Danielle Strace and Caitlin Sahlaney for their dedication and tireless efforts serving Macomb County’s senior population.
“The work our assistant prosecuting attorneys do to hold abusers accountable and protect vulnerable seniors is critical,” stated Lucido. “Elder abuse cases demand both legal skill and compassion, and I am proud of the dedication our team shows in pursuing justice for those who are too often overlooked or taken advantage of.”
If you suspect elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation, report it immediately by calling:
(855) 444-3911 any time, day or night, contacting your local police department, or calling 911 in an emergency.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office continues to offer free S.C.A.M.S. presentations throughout Macomb County. Seniors attending the presentations receive educational materials, scam prevention guidance, and practical tools to recognize and avoid fraud.
