Greater Lansing Food Bank Garden Project

Greater Lansing Food Bank Garden Project Greater Lansing Food Bank's Garden Project helps Lansing area home & community gardeners grow and preserve their own fresh veggies.

We've been a proud program of Greater Lansing Food Bank since 1983. Garden Project provides access to land, how-to education, free seeds and plants, tool lending, a networking hub and more, so that all community members can have access to fresh, healthy food through gardening opportunities. Our network of over 100 community gardens and over 500 income-eligible home gardens is spread across GLFB's

seven-county region. Connect with our parent organization, Greater Lansing Food Bank, at: GLFoodBank1

LAST CALL! This Friday, October 24 is the last day for Resource Center open hours. Come see us 9 a.m. to Noon to pick up any final garden supplies or use the tool lending library.

As the Resource Center shifts to appointment-only, this is also a great time to make sure to return any tools you are done using.

Can't make it to open hours? Email [email protected] to make an appointment to visit at another time.

REMEMBER: Plot cleanup deadline is October 19! Before Sunday, October 19, gardeners with plots in a community garden managed by Garden Project must remove:

🪴Garden stakes, large sticks and trellis materials
🪴Burlap and w**d cloth
🪴Diseased plants
🪴Fencing
🪴Litter and trash
🪴String
🪴Plastic planting containers
🪴Tomato cages
🪴Plant material that has grown into the garden's fence

Remember to harvest ripe crops!

Cleared plots are essential for Garden Project to complete tractor work before winter. If you do not clear your plot(s) by this deadline, you will incur a $50 fee per plot and will be restricted to one plot in 2026. If you have questions, please contact your garden leader or Garden Project at (517) 853-7809.

Rodger Meschke has been volunteering with Greater Lansing Food Bank's Garden Project for 3 years, and enjoys helping on plant distribution days at the Resource Center.

"If you've never experienced the idea of watching something grow, harvesting something you've grown yourself and eating it, I don't think there's any other feeling quite like that," Rodger said.

South Side Community Coalition Hoop House and Garden has been gardening in Lansing for more than 10 years.

In addition to providing the space and opportunity for the South Lansing community to grow their own food and have organic access, they also strive to provide educational programing to youth and aging adults.

"Gardening is empowering," Maddi Mahar said. "It’s a hands-on way to connect with the earth and nourish your body."

The South Side Community Coalition also provides recipes to the community when distributing freshly grown organics.

"Watching food grow from a tiny seed to your plate is a rewarding experience everyone deserves to have," Mahar said.
