Today I voted no on Republican's proposal for the human services portion of the Michigan Department of Health and Services budget. At a time when families are struggling to make ends meet, we cannot afford to make more cuts to programs that they rely on to meet their basic needs.

Today marks the 16th anniversary of President Barack Obama signing the Affordable Care Act!

For more than a decade and a half, the ACA has helped millions of Americans get coverage they can count on, protected people with pre‑existing conditions, and expanded access to preventive care that keeps our community healthier and stronger. Over the last 16 years I have heard from countless Michiganders who were finally able to afford checkups, small business owners who gained peace of mind, and parents who no longer worry about their children aging off their insurance.

And that is why when I took office in 2023, I made it one of my top priorities to enshrine the ACA into Michigan Law. I was proud to work with Gov. Whitmer and my collogues in the House to pass a bill package that did just that. My bill, HB 4620 (Now Public Act 157 of 2023) made it illegal for insurance companies to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions. Thank you Gov. Whitmer for your support and Representatives John Fitzerald, Julie Rodgers, Reggie Miller, and Matt Koleszar for your partnership. Together, we’ve taken meaningful steps to protect the health and dignity of every person who calls Michigan home. As we celebrate 16 years of the ACA, I’m committed to continuing this work and ensuring that access to quality, affordable healthcare remains a right for everyone in our state.

Happy 313 Day to the greatest city in the world! 💙

Today we celebrate the heart, hustle, and history of Detroit. From the neighborhoods that raised us, to the small businesses that power our local economy, to the artists, workers, and families who make this city strong!

Today I celebrated 313 Day by volunteering some of my fellow Detroit caucus members. We spent the afternoon with the incredible team at the Friends of Detroit Animal Care Control, who work every day to care for animals in need and connect them with loving homes. Their compassion and dedication are an example of what makes Detroit such a special place. 🐾

I’m proud to represent Detroit in the Michigan House of Representatives and to fight every day for the people who make this city what it is. Detroit has always led the way with resilience, innovation, and community. Let’s continue supporting our local businesses, uplifting our neighborhoods, and showing the world what the 313 is all about.

Happy 313 Day, Detroit!

My immediate reaction to Gov. Whitmer's State of the State is that I'm glad she emphasized passing a state budget that's on time. This budget should prioritize people over politics and protect Medicaid and Medicare for the most vulnerable Michiganders. Also, we must continue to fund free school lunches for all and address our state's literacy crisis. I'm grateful to Gov. Whitmer for championing these issues over her tenure. I'm looking forward to advancing a budget that puts Michiganders first.

Today, we remember and honor the life of Rev. Jesse Jackson. Rev. Jackson was a towering figure in the long march toward justice, dignity, and equality. His voice carried the hopes of generations, his courage opened doors that once seemed permanently closed, and his unwavering commitment to civil rights changed the course of history.

Rev. Jackson taught us that leadership is service, that hope is a discipline, and that every one of us has a role to play in building a more just world. From the streets to the pulpit to the global stage, he never stopped pushing America to live up to its highest ideals.

As we reflect on his legacy, may we carry forward the spirit of his work speaking truth, lifting others, and refusing to accept injustice as inevitable. Rest in power, Rev. Jackson. Your light endures in the movements you inspired and the lives you touched.
