It was great welcoming SEIU to my office.

SEIU’s work is rooted in the belief that every worker deserves dignity, respect, and the opportunity to build a good life for themselves and their families.

It’s been an honor to work alongside them. I am grateful for the conversation and for all they do to advocate for working people across our communities!

It was an honor to present a tribute recognizing Charles Hudson III for 50 years of service to this community and membership in Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Five decades of leadership, service, and commitment to community is something truly worth celebrating. Thank you for giving of yourself and your time to make this place we call home better!

It was a joy to visit the Grand Rapids Child Discovery Center.

I was BLOWN AWAY by the students who allowed me to join a reading activity for kindergartners, and by the 3rd graders who explained to me policy they have been working on. My heart was bursting.

Thank you to the staff, students, and families for welcoming me into your school community and for all you do to support our young learners.

Last year I heard loud and clear from our community that people were struggling. They had questions about everything happening in our country, and they were missing spaces to gather and just be together.

This birthed my Sunday Dinner & Dialogue series.

This month it was a pleasure to partner with Messiah Baptist Church for dinner and to have a robust conversation about the Voting Rights Act.

The truth is over the past 15yrs the Supreme Court has dismantled the VRA and I appreciate Rev. Smith for understanding how important this conversation is. We talked about the history of the act, rulings the Supreme Court has made to dismantle it, and how it has directly impacted the right for Black people to vote.

Thank you to everyone that attended and to everyone that committed to stay engaged and fight for our rights!

See you at dinner in August!

There’s nothing more powerful than young people stepping up, organizing, and making their voices heard.

I had such a great time celebrating the end of the year with the Calvin Dems — a group that reminds us exactly why College Democrats matter. As the foundation of this country is being assaulted the next generation is where leadership is built, ideas turn into action, and the future of our communities takes shape.

I didn’t get here alone, and spaces like this are exactly how the next generation will get there too. Let’s keep organizing and let's keep showing up.

We want to hear YOUR housing story! Please follow the link in our bio and tell us your experience with housing in Michigan.

Housing costs have increased by 105% in the last decade. How have increased costs impacted you and your family? Have you struggled to find an affordable apartment, save for a home, stay close to work or family, or remain in the community you grew up in?

Too many Michiganders are being priced out of the places they call home. Your story helps put real experiences behind the numbers and shows why action on housing matters. We appreciate everyone willing to share their perspective and help move this conversation forward.

We showed up today and reminded people WHY housing is so important to the people of MI.

All across the state local officials are telling us that we can’t tell them what to do, and they’re saying it at the expense of the young Michiganders who want to build a life here.

One thing I’ve never done is backed down from a fight that I thought was worth it. Today I spoke to a room full of homeowners- but I spoke on behalf of the people who can’t be in the room.

They’re working, studying, and trying to make a dollar stretch. They’re wondering why they keep working harder and getting less. They’re praying. They’re frustrated. They’re wondering why they aren’t where their parents were at their age. They’re tired. And today I was there to hold a seat at the table for them.

This fight is the hardest one I’ve ever had. There’s been lots of yelling, lots of people telling me housing isn’t the states business, lots of people making threats- but that lets me know we are heading the right way.

This fight is worth it. 💪🏾

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. There is a lot going on in the world- taking care of your mental well-being is just as important as taking care of your physical health. Seeking support is a sign of strength, and no one should have to struggle alone.

Strong communities start with healthy minds. Let’s continue building a community where people feel seen, supported, and empowered to ask for help when they need it.

If you or someone you know is struggling, resources are available and help is always within reach.

For 60 years the Grand Rapids Housing Commission has been here working to make sure housing is available and affordable.

It was my pleasure to be chosen as this years keynote and to be able to thank them for their mission. I spoke about housing being a right and removing barriers to not only rental opportunities, but ownership so that the next generation can plant their roots.

Congratulations on 60 years!
