Staff Pick Sunday - Eyal S. recommends Night Watch, by Sergei Lukyanenko.

"If you only read one Russian dark fantasy novel in your lifetime, make it this one.* -

*hahaha, just kidding! You should definitely read the rest of the series too.

Night Watch is the first in a series of six urban fantasy novels set in Russia, about the Others - beings who can wield supernatural powers of Dark or Light, and have access to the extradimensional Twilight realm. The Night and Day Watches have been caught in a standstill for centuries, until the appearance of a new Other, the most powerful in a generation, forces both sides into action.
Although there are a few dated references (Netscape Navigator?), the nature of the Others and the Twilight give these books a timeless, otherworldly atmosphere. If you enjoy gritty, harsh urban fantasy, this is definitely a series to check out."

Agustina Bazterrica's incredible prose and descriptions fully immerses you in this dystopian world and surprises you to the very end. "
