Michigan should not be lending our highways to federal surveillance. That is why I signed on to a letter calling for MDOT to cancel its agreement with federal law enforcement allowing surveillance of state highways.

We knew that when Donald Trump was elected again in 2024 that he would bring with him lawlessness, incompetence, and corruption. It is the duty of state governments to protect our residents from the weaponization of our federal government by the president against his perceived political opponents.

I have said since the beginning of this administration that I am prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that the president cannot abuse his influence over the disbursement of funds or order his personal paramilitary force to interfere in our state in retribution for Michigan voting against him in 2020. He has never stopped relitigating that election, and he has never stopped acting on it. That promise stands.

Whatever the goals of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency were at its formation just over two decades ago, it is overwhelmingly clear that the agency has gone rogue. From killing legal residents and citizens alike in cold blood with seeming impunity to harassing civilians and detaining the wrong targets, it is crucial for elected officials from Congress down to the local level to ask themselves what is within their capacity to do to rein in ICE.

Whatever the merits of license plate readers, we cannot allow them to be used for politically motivated ends, and this administration could not make it more clear that it will use every single tool at its disposal to target its political opponents. Michigan must remove this tool.

Thanks to Robyn Vincent and WDET 101.9FM for having me on The Metro this morning to talk about the legislation State Representative Jason Hoskins and I introduced to crack down on excessive vehicle noise along state highways like Woodward Avenue.

If you live near a state highway, you know the noise from modified exhausts and speeding isn't just annoying, it disrupts sleep and quality of life block by block. This bill gives local law enforcement better tools to actually enforce the noise limits already on the books.

Until Congress abolishes ICE, states have to protect their own people. Michigan needs to act now to bar immigration enforcement from schools and hospitals, require agents to show their faces, and keep our voter file out of this administration's hands.

For years, residents along Woodward have told me the same thing: they can't enjoy their own homes in the summer without the roar of modified exhausts drowning out everything else. Broken sleep. Startled kids and pets. A constituent whose partner was in hospice and just needed quiet. This isn't a minor annoyance, it's a real quality of life issue for thousands of people who live along this corridor.

I'm grateful to my constituents, who have spent years pushing for a fix and founded community groups like C.A.L.M., and to our local public safety officers for helping us get the details right. Rep. Jason Hoskins and I introduced HBs 6151 and 6152 to give police real tools to enforce the law, raise penalties for repeat offenders, and offer a clear path to compliance for people who get caught by surprise.

Woodward should still be a place people love living, driving, and gathering. We can protect that and give residents their peace back.

Michigan lawmakers are targeting loud cars and modified exhausts with new legislation aimed at reducing noise on Woodward and beyond.

Representative Jason Hoskins and I have reintroduced legislation to address excessive noise along Woodward Ave and other state highways. The bills would empower local police departments to enforce existing state bans on modified mufflers. They would also raise penalties while giving first-time offenders a chance to come into compliance without penalty.

This problem has grown worse in recent years. As cheap, easily accessible exhaust modifications have proliferated, our communities have been inundated with noise pouring off state highways. That noise raises stress, robs people of sleep, disturbs veterans suffering from PTSD and patients recovering at home, and disrupts the peaceful enjoyment of homes. The people responsible often engage in other risky behavior, like speeding, racing, and reckless driving. These bills would meaningfully improve the quality of life, public health, and safety of our communities.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out to my office over the last few years urging state action. Your tireless push for a solution drives this work.

Absentee ballots for the August primary have been sent out! If you made a mistake on your ballot or if you want to make a change you can go to your local clerk and request a new ballot.

Remember: for the primary ballot partisan section you can only vote in one party’s primary, you cannot vote for a Republican in one race and a Democrat in another.

When you finish filling out your ballot you can return it by mail or in-person at your clerk’s office.

Pride began as a protest. So when House Republicans blocked us from introducing the Pride Month resolution again this year, we took it to the Capitol steps and read it aloud anyway. This community has always found a way to be seen, and House Dems will always stand shoulder to shoulder with you.

Michiganders pay the highest energy rates in the Midwest. And utility companies have been overcharging customers nationally by nearly $6 billion a year for decades. This month, I introduced House Bills 6093-6095 with my colleagues to change that.
