Happy New Year.

01/02/2025

Yesterday, marked my final day as Downriver’s State Representative. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to serve Downriver, the lessons, and the blessings this experience has granted me.

I learned that the love I have for my community is unconditional. It’s costly, it’s transformative and it can be deeply painful because it doesn’t have to be reciprocated.

But I choose to love anyway.💜

We visited BAMF Health to see how they are improving women’s access to precision medicine. They have reimagined health care. They shared their work in advancing early diagnosis and treatment options for women with breast cancer, endometriosis, neuroendocrine tumors, and more. Thank you for helping advocate for women’s health in Michigan.

Today, I testified before the Michigan House Regulatory Reform Committee on House Bill 5786, which would reduce the required training hours for barbers from 1,800 to 1,500.

This change was inspired by a constituent, the owner of Hair Lab Detroit in Southgate, who highlighted how the current requirement discourages students and creates financial burdens. At 1,800 hours, Michigan’s requirement is nearly 6 times that of EMTs and limits reciprocity with other states, making it harder for licensed barbers to move here and work.

HB 5786 will lower costs, reduce program time, and attract more barbers to Michigan.

Today, I introduced House Bills 6047 and 6048 to expand healthcare access by ensuring coverage for women and individuals seeking IVF and other reproductive care. These bills aim to support families and address critical gaps in reproductive health services. Every Michigander deserves access to the care they need.

Governor Whitmer has signed my House Bill 5779 into law. This important legislation addresses a unique situation in Grosse Ile Township, allowing the township to purchase and operate the privately-owned toll bridge that provides access to and from the island if the voters choose.

I’m grateful for the collaborative efforts of Grosse Ile Township Supervisor Budny, Manager Thiel, Treasurer Nadeau, and Sen. Camilleri in making this happen. This law will help ensure that our local government can continue serving its residents effectively. Now, it’s up to the voters of Grosse Ile to decide if they want the township to purchase the bridge.

Last year, at this time, we introduced a Forging Day Resolution. This week, we continue to celebrate Forging Week here in Downriver. Our region has a rich history of manufacturing excellence, and the forging industry plays a vital role in powering our local economy. From skilled craftsmanship to innovation, the work done in our community ensures that we remain a leader in manufacturing.

Happy 102nd Birthday to Henry Stanley Piwowar. Long-time Wyandotte resident, Henry served in WWII with distinction, earning numerous honors for his bravery. A loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. It was an honor to present a tribute to him at his current home in Plymouth with Rep. Koleszar and Brian Martin, the Veteran Service Officer for the Washtenaw County Department of Veteran Affairs. Thank you for your service.

Today, alongside Mayor DeSana, the local Iron Workers, local leaders, and community members, I had the honor of attending the ribbon cutting for MI Cookie Project at 3051 4th Street in Wyandotte!

This isn’t just a bakery—MI Cookie Project is a mission-driven organization that’s making a positive impact on our community by empowering individuals with unique abilities. I’m so proud to support this incredible community that truly embodies the spirit of inclusivity, hard work, and joy that makes Downriver even better.

I encourage you to stop by and grab some delicious cookies while supporting a wonderful cause.
