🇺🇸 81 Years Ago Today — The Flag Raising on Mount Suribachi

On February 23, 1945, six U.S. Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima — and in that single moment, history was made.

Photographer Joe Rosenthal captured the image that would go on to become one of the most iconic pictures ever taken — a symbol of American resolve, sacrifice, and the unbreakable spirit of the U.S. Marine Corps.

The Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the bloodiest in the Pacific Theater. Nearly 7,000 Americans lost their lives, and over 19,000 were wounded. The Marines who fought there gave everything they had on that volcanic island, far from home, so that freedom could prevail.

Admiral Chester Nimitz said it best — “Among the men who fought on Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue.”

Today we remember their courage. We honor their sacrifice. And we never forget what that flag represents.

Semper Fidelis. 🇺🇸

I invite you to join us for a solemn tribute commemorating the 35th Anniversary of Operation Desert Storm.

Thirty-five years ago, the call to liberate Kuwait was answered by the brave men and women of Michigan. Though the conflict was swift, its impact on our service members, their families, and our communities endures. We gather to honor their courage and to ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten.

Your presence would be a meaningful reminder of our shared commitment to serve our veterans with the same devotion and selflessness they showed in service to our nation.

Reminder:

Lansing Veterans Council to Host Solemn Wreath Laying Ceremony

Honoring the U.S. Navy’s 250th Birthday
LANSING, MI – The Lansing community will gather to commemorate a historic milestone as it observes the 250th Birthday of the United States Navy with a solemn Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Evergreen Cemetery Columbarium. The public event will take place on Monday, October 13, 2025, at Noon, paying tribute to the quarter-millennium of sacrifice and service by the nation’s Sailors.

The ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will be led by State Representative Gina Johnsen, who will serve as Master of Ceremonies. It is designed to honor the Navy’s founding date of October 13, 1775, and recognize its enduring role in maritime security and global stability.

Local Leaders and Veterans to Participate
A highlight of the observance will be the participation of Lansing's civic leadership. Mayor Andy Schor will present an official Proclamation recognizing the Navy's anniversary, followed by a legislative tribute delivered by Representative Johnsen.

The program includes several moving Navy traditions:
● The Tolling of Eight Bells: The ceremony will begin with the ringing of eight bells, a maritime tradition marking the end of a watch.
● Reading of the Six Bells: Navy Veteran Rick Riggins will detail the Navy's six core operational competencies, reminding attendees of the modern scope of naval power.
● The Lonely Vigil: American Legion 8th District Officer Gene Nethaway will deliver a profound tribute honoring the personal and often solitary sacrifices made by Sailors at sea.
The event will conclude with the ceremonial Wreath Laying by designated community leaders, the playing of the Navy Hymn ("Eternal Father, Strong to Save"), and the solemn bugle call of Taps, rendered by Kevin Wyatt.
Invitation to the Community

"The Navy’s 250th birthday is a truly historic moment for our nation," said Michele Fickes. "We invite all veterans, active-duty service members, and Lansing residents to join us as we pay our deepest respects to the generations of Sailors who have protected our freedoms from the sea. Their valor is a cornerstone of our liberty."

Following the formal ceremony, attendees are invited to stay for a celebratory Navy 250th Birthday Cake Cutting reception on location.
