Hi everyone! I’m looking to raise awareness about the spread of aggressive invasive species in mid Michigan, and I need help with my mission. I need someone who does drone photography to film an infestation to show the massive scale of the problem, and why our government needs to take action to protect our precious ecosystem before it’s too late.
The species pictured here is called lesser celandine, or ficaria verna, and it is rapidly spreading on the Grand River in Delta Township and on the Lansing River Trail. This species outcompetes our iconic native spring wildflowers such as trillium, trout lilies, Dutchman’s breeches, and popular foraging plants like ramps or wild leeks. Native insects do not use this species, and wildlife cannot eat it. As it spreads, it takes away important resources that insects and wildlife need to get from winter to summer, and if nothing is done to combat it, it could speed up ecosystem collapse in our area.
This plant dies back by the end of May, leaving bare ground where other native and invasive species will grow into the summer. I need someone to film the areas affected. This footage would be shared widely to raise awareness and spur action, as well as continue the discussion around invasive plants and why they are a problem, and to educate people on the impact invasive species can have on our ecosystem. If you or anyone you know can help, please let me know! And if you see this species blooming in the next few weeks, please do not dig it up or walk over it or mow it, because those things cause it to spread much faster. If this plant is growing on your property and you want to do something about it, you can google how to kill lesser celandine or contact me or the Eaton Conservation District for more information. Thanks as always for your support and consideration! Together we can help protect the important ecological resources in our area!
