I introduced some of the original legislation to rein in special interest money, and I have worked for months alongside MMOP to bring this issue directly to the people.
With more than half a million signatures gathered, the message from Michiganders is loud and clear: they want to vote on this in November.
Today, Speaker Hall put on political theater in an attempt to hijack that process. That is why I voted NO on this House Republican sham.
They will try to claim this vote was about campaign finance reform. Donāt buy it. They only brought this up to create an easy loophole to gut it later. When voters approve a ballot initiative, it requires a 2/3 majority for the legislature to amend it. But by adopting it now, Republicans would leave the door wide open to dismantle it down the road with a simple majority.
Michiganders deserve real transparency, not backroom games, and they deserve the chance to make their voices heard at the ballot box.
I want to thank Senate Majority Leader Brinks for standing firm and making it clear that Senate Democrats will not subvert the will of the voters.
Note: While conventional wisdom says when you are explaining you are losing in politics, I trust that the people are smart enough to see through this Republican political games. If the Speaker truly supported this, he could have passed our legislation months ago.
