Just before training this evening, Ladder 14 responded to a call for a cat stuck in a tree.

Upon arrival, crews found the feline perched approximately 50 feet above the ground. Members assessed the situation, extended the aerial ladder, and carefully made their way to the stranded cat. The cat was safely retrieved, brought down the ladder, and reunited with its very relieved owners.

While this may not be the type of rescue we train for every week, it was a great reminder that our firefighters are always ready to helpβ€”whether it’s a structure fire, emergency medical call, or a four-legged friend in need.

The homeowner was extremely grateful for the crew’s efforts, and we’re happy to report the cat is safe, healthy, and back home where it belongs.

Not a bad way to kick off training night for the members of Ladder 14!

Traffic Talk: Fire Hydrant Parking Clearance

Parking near a fire hydrant is about more than simply not blocking the hydrant itself.

Under Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. Β§ 3353), vehicles are prohibited from parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. This is a statewide standard that applies unless otherwise posted or directed.

The reason for this requirement is safety and response time. In an emergency, fire crews need immediate access to a reliable water source and enough working space to connect equipment quickly and efficiently. That includes clear access from multiple anglesβ€”not just the hydrant cap.

Even if a vehicle is not directly in front of the hydrant, parking too close can still slow down operations or force additional maneuvering during a critical response.

This is one of the most important parking restrictions on any roadway because it protects the ability of first responders to act without delay when every second matters.
