On May 28, South Whidbey High School Jazz Band and Music Survey students had an extraordinary opportunity to learn from one of the world’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Christian McBride, prior to his performance at the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts.

An acclaimed bassist, composer, bandleader, and eleven-time Grammy Award winner, McBride spent time performing for students, answering questions, and sharing insights from his remarkable career in music. His message combined practical advice with encouragement for aspiring musicians: practice whenever you can, use your time wisely, seek out opportunities to perform and learn, play as often as possible, and never underestimate the importance of warming up.

Perhaps his most memorable advice for students pursuing a career in music was simple: “Show up on time, be cool, play the way they want, and repeat.”

The workshop provided students with a rare behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to succeed as a professional performer and left many inspired to continue developing their craft.

A heartfelt thank you to the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts for making this experience possible, to Allyson Meyer for capturing the event through photography, and especially to Christian McBride for generously sharing his talent, wisdom, and passion with our students.

Thank you to WICA, Allyson Meyer for the photos, and Christian McBride.

Last week, Kindergarten students in Ms.Cs class learned the butterfly lifecycle through a multi week science experiment where students saw first hand how a caterpillar builds its chrysalis, and then hatches into a beautiful butterfly. The experiment was celebrated by releasing the butterfly’s into our school garden. Way to go Orcas! Congratulations on spreading your wings and moving up to 1st grade!
Thank you to Ashley Cottrell for the beautiful photos!

Seventh Graders Enjoy a Day of Fun and Service at Deer Lake

Our seventh-grade students recently spent a memorable day at Lakeside Camp on beautiful Deer Lake, enjoying a field trip filled with outdoor recreation, teamwork, and community service.

Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to kayak, swim, and participate in a variety of recreational activities including volleyball, basketball, and pickleball. The camp setting provided a perfect backdrop for students to build friendships, challenge themselves, and enjoy the outdoors.

In addition to the fun and games, students also took part in a community service project, helping maintain the beautiful grounds at the camp. Their hard work and positive attitudes reflected the character and responsibility we strive to develop in our students.

The trip was a wonderful combination of recreation, learning, and service. Students returned tired, happy, and full of stories from a day well spent.

A huge thank you to the teachers, staff, and parent volunteers for their efforts!

We also want to acknowledge Lakeside Camp for their generous
partnership with SWSD, and for helping make this experience such a success.

Students had a great time!

Congratulations to the Kindergarten Class of 2026!!!!
Each year, Kindergarten teacher, Haley Gutierrez, has a count down to the last day of school. Last week, Mrs. Codda joined her class for their end of the year Stuffy Tea Party. The students had rose tea with short bread cookies, and brought their favorite friend! The tea party was followed by their Kindergarten graduation. The Kindergarten teachers gifted their students with capes to help them fly into first grade with all of their learning super powers. We are so grateful to our PTA and all of Kindergarten families for all of their support this year! Thank you to Ms. Gutierrez for all of the photos.

Congratulations to the South Whidbey Class of 2026! Today's commencement was filled with celebration, love, memories, aspirations, and joy. Each graduate displayed their uniqueness and accomplishments. Olivia had each of her friends add to her cap to emphasize the memories they shared together. Superintendent Dr. Becky Clifford gave her first South Whidbey graduation speech to the Falcons celebrating their "beautiful, multifaceted, multidimensional" talents and resilience as they "fearlessly soar into their future". Jack Hempel, student choice speaker, provided memories of their years at South Whidbey and challenged each of the graduates to "go out into the big world with a smile, a smile that says you really come for a cool place." . Valedictorian, Callahan Dobmeier, reminded her class that they are "stewards of learning" and "citizens of the earth," "stand strong and be open".

Great job to the class of 2027 for hosting the commencement celebration. You're up next!
