June 9 School Vote
The Langdon Area School Board will be holding elections and a building fund levy vote on June 9th from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM at the Langdon Area High School. There will be four positions up for election with Justin Cheatley, Dawn Kruk and Kyle Rollness on the ballot and an open position nobody petitioned for, so it will be a write-in. Another part of the ballot is a vote to increase the 3-mill building fund's levy ability by 5 mills, giving the board the authority to levy up to 8 mills in the building fund. The building fund is restricted in how it can be spent. It must be spent on physical structures in the school district. In the last vote, there was a significant amount of deferred maintenance that was included in the proposal. We have and need two buildings to serve the children of the Langdon Area School District, and it is very costly for general maintenance, but greater concern is when an area of deferred maintenance becomes eminent. Some examples of deferred maintenance that are beyond warranty and in need of updating or in risk of failure are listed below.
Roofing, both buildings: $4.55 million
HS/MS HVC: $ 3.4 million
Electrical updates: $ 965,800
Interior Finishes $ 481,500
Building Exteriors $126,200
Kitchens $65,000
The maximum of 8 mills for the building fund, if the vote passes, will cover annual maintenance with the intention to save and plan for when areas of deferred maintenance fail as listed above.
What will the extra 5 mills cost me if I own a home with a full and true value of $150,000? The additional tax liability would be $33.75. In reality, every $50,000 full and true value of your home will cost you $11.25 each year. The full and true value of your home is different than what it could be sold for; you can check your tax statement for this amount. Farmland varies so much in value due to soil types, each parcel would need to be determined individually. Taxable value is on the tax statements provided by the county. You may contact the school if you have specific questions.
