Four-wing Saltbush (Atriplex canescens) is a fast-growing and long-lived shrub in the genus Atriplex found throughout the Antelope valley, especially in saline, alkaline, caliche type soils that are common locally.
Its seeds and foliage, feed a variety of small mammals and birds. Also a vital browse species for domestic livestock serving as a crucial forage source during winter and drought. These plants are dioecious meaning a female plant must be located near a male plant to produce fruit. Four-wing is highly variable and are known to hybridize with others of the same genus.
They’re often found in association with big sagebrush, shadscale, black greasewood and rubber rabbitbrush. This species is very easy to grow, and is often one of the first plants to establish in disturbed areas.
