With snow on the way and temperatures forecast to be in the single digits, some home occupants opt for auxiliary heating systems to supplement their home heat. If you decide to use a space heater or other auxiliary heating system, please take these precautions to ensure your safety and those around you:

➡️ Plug all auxiliary heaters directly into the wall outlet. Do NOT use extension cords or power strips.
➡️ Only operate the unit when you are home. If you leave the house, turn it off.
➡️ Keep all combustibles a minimum of 3 feet away from the unit.
➡️ Place unit on a level, flat surface on the ground.
➡️ If the unit is damaged, do not use it!

Remember: do not utilize kerosene heaters or stovetop/ovens as an auxiliary heat source!

Our 2025 Chris McCann Spirit of Service Award went to FF Matt Grumbrecht. His peers will be the first to say that he has the biggest and most genuine heart on the job. Whether it's listening to and counseling people after a drug overdose or traumatic event, or checking in with someone who has simply let a bad moment affect their day, Matt conveys respect and empathy for both members of the public along with his fellow firefighters.

His loyalty to the wellbeing of those around him and his dedication to supporting people on and off the job is a remarkable asset to us as a Bureau and City as a whole. Congratulations Matt!

Our 2025 Officer of the Year is Captain Pete Jacobs. As captain of Engine 1, Pete oversaw the process of putting our new 2024 Pierce pumper into service. Through his leadership and ownership of the task, he created an effective and efficient framework for the process. His attention to detail ensured that the engine was set up fpr success from the very first call. In addition, he designed a comprehensive training plan to prepare all personnel to operate the new pumper effectively. His committment to doing the job correctly, even when requiring time and effort outside his normal duties, set a strong example for others. Congratulations Captain Jacobs!

Our 2025 Firefighter of the Year is Mike Nixon. For nearly two years, FF Nixon stepped up to the plate from his role as driver of Truck 1 to serve as officer. He quickly adapted to the leadership role by making contrubutions to improve T1, lead trainings, offer guidance to his crew, and oversee the qualification process for A platoon. He exemplifies the City's core values of quality, teamwork, integrity, and respect and has shown his dedication by helping to lead a team that promotes success. Congratulations Mike!

In June, LCBF responded to a building fire on Euclid Avenue where it was reported that several occupants were still inside and on the balconies. Truck 2 was the first to arrive on scene. Inside, FF Dennis Kianka found the fire and attempted to keep it in check with a water can before quickly crawling past fire to search apartments, where he located and rescued an occupant.

Outside, FF Ben Davis found heavy smoke venting and several people on the third-floor balconies that needed to be rescued. He calmly made multiple rescues while navigating various obstacles. The actions of both Truck 2 members showed courage and valor under extreme conditions and their ability to operate effectively as a team played a crucial role in life safety.
