Buford’s Defeat occurred on this day in 1780.

By 2:00 a.m. on May 29, 1780, Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton left Camden, arriving at Rugeley’s Mill by dawn where he learned that Buford was 20 miles ahead. Tarleton caught up with Buford at about 3:00 in the afternoon. Buford defiantly refused Tarleton's demand for surrender, declaring, “I shall defend myself to the last extremity.”

In the Waxhaws, Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton’s British and Loyalist forces (250 men) clashed with Col. Abraham Buford’s Continental troops (350 Virginia Continentals and a detachment of William Washington’s dragoons) at Buford’s Defeat.

As the afternoon sun dipped low, Tarleton launched a ferocious assault, breaking Buford’s line. The Patriots found themselves engulfed by the British Dragoons’ and the British Legions’ onslaught. Tarleton’s horse was killed. The aftermath of the battle remains shrouded in controversy, with conflicting accounts of Buford's attempted surrender and the ensuing chaos that unfolded. Regardless of the details, the result was immense: 113 Continentals were killed, 203 captured of which 150 were wounded.

The tales of carnage and “Tarleton’s Quarter” spread like wildfire, igniting a genuine spirit of resistance among the Scotch Irish which expanded to other areas in the south.

As we reflect on the echoes of history from this hallowed ground, let us honor the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom.
