The Heartbreaking Story of Nalongo and Her Brave Grandchildren"

I'm Kelly Cowan, founder of Purple Wishes Children's Foundation Uganda, serving children affected by domestic violence. My foundation was born out of the tragic loss of my daughter Melissa a victim of domestic violence. She was brutally stabbed 82 times by her husband.

Our team encountered a vulnerable family in urgent need. Nalongo, a mentally challenged woman, caring for her three grandchildren - six-year-old twins Kate and Nagawa, and their sibling Oliver.

Their mother fell victim to domestic violence, leaving these innocent children without a mother's love. These children rely solely on their grandmother.

Nalongo works tirelessly, digging yards for people in the village to provide for their basic needs, alongside her grandchildren.

When the team arrived at their humble dwelling, the scene was heart-wrenching. Instead of playing carefree, the children toiled away in the sun, with only raw jackfruit for sustenance. Thankfully, they brought them food, and their faces lit up with gratitude.

Nalongo graciously invited the team into their meager home, filled with love but lacking comfort. The sleeping conditions were saddening - the family shared a bedsheet and a blanket, huddling together for warmth. She shared the heartbreaking reality of dealing with bedwetting, with no respite from this task.

The unwavering resilience of these young souls struck the most. Despite their dire circumstances, they were greeted with joy. It was a poignant reminder that even in despair, childhood innocence can triumph.

Join us in uplifting Nalongo and her brave grandchildren from this cycle of hardship. Together, we can provide them with the support they desperately need - a safe home, sanitation facilities, and a chance at a brighter future. Let's restore their smiles and give them the childhood they deserve.

The Purple Wishes C.E.O visiting the Katanga Slum, Kampala, Uganda, raising awareness about Domestic violence and sexual assault.
This is the biggest slum in Uganda, approximately 2000 live in mud, wood and brick homes. A place with high rates of teenage pregnancies, sexual and domestic violence is very high in this area due to drug abuse and alcohol use. Children live in fear of reporting the sexual assaults and for those who do, the dispute is handled informally between the abuser and the victim’s family.

❤️MELISSA❤️
A daughter, a mother, a sister, a friend, auntie…..the extraordinary and irreplaceable Melissa, whose beauty both internal and external will never be extinguished from our minds. Stabbed 82 times and left to die, a tragedy that we will never forget. You’ve given so much hope to those who had lost hope, to the victims of abuse, your legacy will remain forever, we love you.
