Last night, the Lancaster Police Department came together to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of our officers, communication technicians, professional staff, volunteers, and community partners during our annual awards ceremony.

The ceremony is about more than awards and recognition. It is an opportunity to reflect on the character, sacrifice, and commitment demonstrated by the men and women who serve our department and community every day. The success, growth, and reputation of the Lancaster Police Department are built through the actions of our people, and we are proud to recognize those who have gone above and beyond in service to others.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Chief Gary D. Lewis Jr. for serving as our guest speaker and sharing his perspective on leadership, service, and the law enforcement profession. We would also like to thank the Lancaster Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association for once again organizing and hosting this event. Their continued support of our department and our personnel helps make this special evening possible each year.

To all of our award recipients, nominees, and members of the Lancaster Police Department family, thank you. Your dedication, professionalism, and compassion continue to make a difference in the lives of those we serve and help make our department an organization our community can be proud of.

Sometimes the best moments in policing happen outside of calls for service.

A community member recently shared this video of Officer Robinette taking time to play football with kids in the neighborhood, and we wanted to recognize the kind of connection that makes moments like this possible.

Community policing is about more than responding when something goes wrong. It is about building trust, creating positive relationships, and being present in the neighborhoods we serve. Thank you to the community member who shared this moment, and thank you to Officer Robinette for representing the Lancaster Police Department so well.

What a great day for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Ohio.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support this incredible event as officers, athletes, families, and community members carried the Flame of Hope from Mount Pleasant Elementary to the Fairfield County Fairgrounds. Events like this are a powerful reminder of what can happen when a community comes together in support of inclusion, encouragement, and opportunity for all.

We would like to thank the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, Lancaster Citizen Police Academy Alumni Assn., Lancaster City Schools, Fairfield County Fairgrounds, and all of the community members who came out to cheer on the runners.

A special thank you to the Buckeye Automotive Family for sponsoring this year’s local Torch Run and for their continued support of Special Olympics Ohio and our community.

While today’s run has ended, the mission continues. We are proud to support the incredible athletes of Special Olympics and the message of inclusion they inspire every day

Today, we honor the life and sacrifice of Officer Marvin “Scott” Moyer #99.

On February 25, 1998, Officer Moyer responded to an urgent officer-in-distress call. A subject had struck a squad, tipping it over and ramming it into a vehicle occupied by four elderly women. The subject continued backing up and repeatedly slamming the squad into the vehicle. In the chaos, another officer was injured when the suspect ran over his foot.

Officer Moyer arrived on scene and took immediate action. He broke the side window of the vehicle to stop the threat and successfully removed the keys from the ignition, cutting himself in the process. He then removed glass from the subject’s foot, coming into contact with the subject’s blood.

As a result of that contact, Officer Moyer contracted an infectious disease and passed away from related complications nineteen years later.

We are forever grateful for his courage and selfless service.
End of Watch: May 26, 2017.
May we never forget his sacrifice.

The Lancaster Police Department is advising the public that the downtown area, including the police department, is currently without power due to a transformer fire.

Multiple major intersections are without functioning traffic signals. Please treat all intersections without power as four way stops and use extra caution while traveling through the area.

Additionally, the 100 block of South Broad Street and the alley beside the Lancaster Police Department are closed at this time.

At this time, there is no estimated timeframe for power restoration. We appreciate your patience and will provide updates as they become available.
