Our volunteers remained steady throughout the day handling 6 incidents as well as partaking in various company level trainings. In the morning hours all three apparatus were staffed - The tower crew headed over to Greenfield Road to do member tower sign offs, which include setup, operation, and climbing of the aerial. Squad 63 was doing new driver orientation and first due familiarization. Engine 63 remained staffed at the hall with 4 personnel and assisted company 62 with a cardiac arrest.
Around noon time, Squad 63 was dispatched to the no hundred block of Pitney Road for a tree across wires with grass catching fire. Crews arrived and controlled traffic. Crews were dedicated to the incident for just over 5 hours.
As crews were operating on the wires call, Deputy 62 (Horn) called out a brush fire, in the 100 block of Pitney road, down a steep embankment near the railroad tracks. Squad 63 sent two members with hooks and cans to extinguish the fire, with the assistance of Squad, Pumper Tanker, and Utility 62. Deputy 62 held the 63 command.
Just before 1 PM, box 63-06 was filled for a reported fire in a commercial building in the 100 block of Greenfield Road. Squad 63 redirected from the wires call. 911 caller report fire in the roof. Deputy 62 (Horn) arrived to find smoke and fire showing from the roof, hitting the working fire dispatch. Squad 62 and 63 arrived simultaneously. Squad 62 secured a water supply and stretched handlines to the door with the assistance of Squad 63. Squad 63 acted as the first due special. Ladder 204 arrived and was sent to the roof, where an active roof fire was discovered. Squad 63 and Ladder 204 operated together on extinguishing all active fire. Tower 63 sent a crew to the roof and controlled the utilities. Crews overhauled the building and extinguished remaining hotspots and confirmed the work with the assistance of a thermal imaging drone. Crews operated for just over two hours. Deputy 62 and Deputy 63 held the command with assistance from Chief 64. Solar Panel Awareness Training greatly prepared our team for this incident.
As crews were cleaning up, engine 63 was dispatched to the no hundred block of Parkside Ave, for a brush fire. Engine 63 made the response with 4 and extinguished a 5x5 area of fire.
Later in the evening, Tower 63 was dispatched as part of the initial for box 66-04, with the 911 Caller reporting a hot water heater explosion. Tower 63 made the response with 5, and accomplished various fire ground tasks before being released.
Our Lafayette Volunteers have now responded to 282 calls so far in the year of 2026.
