In just over 2 weeks, construction will begin on Main Street. While this will be a short term inconvenience, we’re excited to see improvements to local infrastructure.

This post shows the official KDOT detour, we encourage everyone along this route to be aware and cautious with the increased traffic as well as asking all other local traffic to slow down around construction zones as your daily routes change.

Kearny Co. Fire & Rescue will be shuffling trucks around in our station before the project starts so there will be no interruption in service.

Thanks for your patience during this project. Stay safe!

K-25 to close in Lakin beginning June 15

The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin a resurfacing project on June 15 on K-25 between Santa Fe Avenue and Washington Avenue in Lakin.

K-25 will be closed between Santa Fe and Washington avenues during construction. Motorists will be directed to follow the signed detour via Bopp Boulevard, W. Railroad Avenue and S. Bridge St.

The closure is necessary because the railroad crossing within the work zone is not wide enough to accommodate traffic while construction is underway. As a result, traffic cannot be shifted through the work zone, requiring a full closure.

Vogts-Parga Construction LLC, of Moundridge, is the contractor for the $1.7 million project. Work is expected to be complete by the end of August, weather permitting.

For more information, contact Heather Jennings, construction manager, at 620-255-2880, or Yazmin Moreno, public information officer, at 620-765-7080.

The map shows the approximate location of the closure in red and the detour in blue.

This week the fire department had the opportunity to learn about how horse trailers with living quarters are set up as well as the challenges that could come with an accident involving one of these trailers with horses inside. As summer comes around and rodeo season ramps up, there are more of these rigs going dow the road. While we hope we never have to use the knowledge we learned, we’re always ready to help our community in their time of need.

Special thanks to Jessica Quinter, Reagan Weathered, and Jim Boy Hash for spending their time and resources to help us with this training.
