Legion Members: this is the annual plea for you to stop wearing your Legion cap in political commercials or to political events.
The American Legion prohibits members from wearing their official caps or any apparel featuring the organization’s emblem in political commercials or at partisan events to maintain its strictly nonpartisan status. As a federally chartered organization, The American Legion is prohibited from endorsing candidates or political parties, and wearing the cap could imply the organization supports a specific candidate.
Key Reasons for the Policy:
Non-Political Mandate: According to Article II, Section 2 of its constitution, the American Legion is nonpolitical and cannot be used to promote the candidacy of any person seeking public office.
Official Uniform Status: The American Legion cap is recognized as the official uniform. Wearing it in a political ad could lead to the public assuming the entire organization supports a specific candidate, which would jeopardize its tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(19) organization.
Neutrality & Independence: To maintain its effectiveness in lobbying for veteran-specific issues, the organization avoids taking sides in political campaigns.
Individual Rights vs. Organization Policy: Individual members are encouraged to be involved in the political process, but not while wearing official Legion gear, as this would violate the organization's rule.
Again, please don't be selfish and be a liability to our great organization.
