LPD has several specialized units, including the Internal Affairs Bureau, Detective Bureau, Traffic Safety, Community Resource Unit, School Resource Officers, Special Response Team (SRT), Negotiations Unit, Dive Team, Motorcycle Patrol, Bicycle Patrol Units, and K-9. The current Chief of the Lakewood Police Department is Gregory H.

REMEMBERING 9/11

Today, members of the Lakewood Police Department participated in the Stairs to Remember 9/11 Stair Climb at ShoreTown Ballpark.

With each step, they paid tribute to the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001, while honoring every life lost and all those forever impacted by that tragic day.

Today on the 25th anniversary, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the courage and sacrifice of the first responders who ran toward danger to help others.

We remember the families who lost loved ones, the heroes who gave everything, and the strength our nation showed in the days that followed.

LAKEWOOD MAN CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED ARSON

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that on September 3, 2026, Yaakov Stern, 48, of Lakewood, was charged with Aggravated Arson in connection with an incident that occurred in Lakewood Township on August 25, 2026.

On August 25, 2026, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the Lakewood Township Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to a structure fire on Delaware Trail. Upon arrival, emergency personnel observed an active structure fire; the fire was subsequently extinguished.

An investigation by the Lakewood Township Police Department Detective Bureau led to the identification of Stern as the individual responsible for starting the fire. On September 3, 2026, Stern was taken into custody by Detectives from the Lakewood Township Police Department. He was transported to the Ocean County Jail where he is presently lodged pending a detention hearing.

Prosecutor Billhimer commends the Lakewood Township Police Department Detective Bureau, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit- Arson Squad, Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, for their collective efforts in connection with this investigation.

The charges referenced above are merely accusations and the press and public are reminded that all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

POLICE ACTIVITY – LAUREL & CLOVER

Lakewood Police officers responded to the area of Laurel and Clover following a report of an individual who may have been armed.

As officers searched the area, a nearby school was placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution. An individual was subsequently located in connection with the incident, and no weapon was observed or located.

At this time, there is no known threat to the public and no indication of an ongoing threat in the area.

Officers will remain in the area as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the initial report. Residents may notice a continued police presence as a precaution.

Additional information will be provided as appropriate.

Today, the Lakewood Police Department remembers Patrolman Nicklas Shimonovich #392.

On September 5, 2020, we lost Nicklas — a son, a brother, a nephew, a friend, and a police officer who truly loved what he did. His dedication to law enforcement and his pride in serving others left a lasting mark on our department and our community.

Nick joined the Lakewood Police Department in March 2018, and he truly loved being a police officer. Wearing the badge meant something to him. It was more than a job — it was a calling, a responsibility, and something he was proud to dedicate himself to.

Nicklas was part of a law enforcement family. He was the son of Det. Lt. R. Shimonovich #271 and Det. Sgt. J. Shimonovich #272, brother of Ptl. L. Shimonovich #442, and nephew of Ptl. F. Rivera #294.

Six years later, we continue to remember Nick — not only for the uniform he wore and the service he gave, but for the person he was and the place he will always hold in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Time may pass, but the memories remain. His name remains. His service remains. And his place in the Lakewood Police family will always remain.

Forever remembered. Forever missed. Never forgotten.

GOAL: ZERO — TOWN-WIDE TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT

Today, the Lakewood Police Department will be participating in the statewide Goal: Zero traffic safety campaign town-wide.

Goal: Zero is a statewide traffic safety initiative focused on reducing serious crashes and preventing traffic-related deaths and injuries. Law enforcement agencies across New Jersey work together to increase visibility and enforcement, with one shared goal: zero fatalities on our roadways.

As we begin the Labor Day weekend, we want everyone to enjoy the holiday and make it home safely. Please slow down, stay focused, obey the traffic laws, and never drive impaired.

Goal: Zero. Every Trip. Every Road. Every Day.
